REI and Goodwill® Collect Gear Donations Using Give Back Box®

Like many outdoor gearheads, you may have amassed an enviable collection of the latest gear for any outdoor adventure. In doing so, you probably also have that bin of relics, a drawer of 1990s fleeces and that eighth Gore-Tex® jacket that never makes it back into the rotation. It’s all perfectly good gear that you can’t be bothered to sell, nor would you want to throw it away, so what can you do?

Well, it’s not just you! Over half of North Americans believe they have too much stuff. In the U.S., more than 26 billion pounds of clothing and textiles are put in landfills each year. It often is just too easy to toss something in the trash instead of making a special trip to donate the item. This problem becomes even more pronounced in households that don’t have a car.

REI is partnering with Goodwill using the Give Back Box platform to collect high-quality clothing and gear and ensure it finds new life with people who need it. Our goal with Give Back Box is to reduce landfill waste and support Goodwill’s mission of helping people find jobs, earn paychecks and care for their families. Goodwill helps people build their careers by providing employment placement, job training and services such as career counseling, education and mentoring. Last year, more than 312,000 people earned jobs with Goodwill’s help.

Give Back Box

Here’s how this will work:

  • Starting August 18, 2016, REI customers can go to to print a shipping label for the box they receive with their order from
  • Any items the customer wants to donate, not just outdoor items, can go in the box to be shipped directly to Goodwill.
  • The customer seals the box, affixes the label, and leaves it at their door for the USPS to pick up. Alternately, they can drop it off at any USPS or UPS location.
  • The entire process is free for our customers and incredibly simple.
