Hello! I love hiking, but am frequently prone to injury from overpronation and knee issues. Could you recommend some women's hiking boots that provide good support and stability for overpronation?
Typically, when talking about overpronation in footwear, it's generally in reference to running shoes. Hiking boots don't have features specifically for overpronation. That said, you might experience more stability in a hiking boot if that boot has a shank between the midsole and the outsole.
The shank is often a firm piece of plastic or nylon that can prevent the shoe from flexing, or from becoming unstable if you're hiking over uneven terrain. It's thought that a higher boot supports ankle and knee stability, when in reality, the stability comes from the boot's construction underfoot.
We highly recommend seeing one of our footwear specialists either at your nearest retail store, or via our Virtual Outfitting portal as fit assessment is individual to the person. In addition, a footwear specialist could be looking at other factors tied to your overpronation that might help them make a better choice. (An example would be if your overpronation is tied to having low or flat arches; in that case, a footwear specialist would want to choose a boot for you that's wider through the middle of the foot.)
With that in mind, I would recommend checking out these options:
Salomon X-Ultra Mid GTX: This is a cushioned, stable hiking boot that feels more like a running trainer, containing Salomon's proprietary Advanced Chassis to stabilize the heel.
Oboz Bridger Mid B-Dry: The Bridger features a shank throughout the boot and a plate in the midfoot to prevent torsion, or twisting when walking over uneven terrain. This boot runs more narrow in the heel and midfoot, and wider in the forefoot.
Keen Durand II Mid WP: The Keen Durand features a thermoplastic shank throughout the middle of the boot and a heel lock for stability. This boot is sold only in the standard width for women at REI.

Hopefully these give you some starting points in your process to find comfortable, well-fitting boots! Happy trails!
