Did you know that the name for a group of starlings is a "murmuration"? It's an evocative word for a natural phenomenon that can be truly mesmerizing to watch. The movements of the individual starlings in a group can synchronize to such a remarkable degree that the murmuration appears to have a mind of its own.
The result is a stunning show of rapidly shifting patterns across the canvas of the sky. Apparently, even scientists who have studied this behavior have yet to determine how the necessary communication among the birds can occur so quickly.
We invite you to take a 2-minute break today and watch this video of a murmuration by Sophie Windsor Clive. After you've had a chance to take it in, let us know what you think. Have you ever seen something like this in person? How do the birds pull off these acrobatics without crashing?
