Marathons made a little news coast-to-coast this weekend. On Sunday 20-year-old Fatuma Sado of Ethiopia was the first owman to cross the finish line at the Los Angeles Marathon, and on the same day fellow Ethiopian Firehiwot Dado was the top female finisher in the New York City Half Marathon. Heavy snow is forecast this week in the Pacific Northwest, where Whistler, site of Olympic competition last February, has announced an earlier-than-planned opening on Friday (Nov. 19). “Iowa is not flat.” That’s become my standard answer after being quizzed about the weeklong RAGBRAI® (The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) event across Iowa while I do my training rides.
