The climbing cables on Half Dome in Yosemite National Park officially go up today. But what if you weren't able to snag a climbing permit reservation back in March? You can now climb the cables on Half Dome in Yosemite National Park -- and, through June 25, you can comment on their future, too. Cables that help hikers climb a steep, 400-foot ascent of Half Dome's north-facing shoulder just went up June 16. It's the first day in the 2010 hiking season that visitors have been able to climb to Half Dome's 8,842-foot summit. The date is set: Cables go up on Half Dome in Yosemite National Park on June 16. The annual installation of cable handrails on Half Dome's northern shoulder, which permit hikers to ascend a steep, 400-foot slope to Half Dome's 8,842-foot summit, has long been viewed as the unofficial signal that the high-country hiking season in the Sierras is underway.
