As part of our Gear Up to Vote effort, we asked our employees, members and partner organizations to share what motivates them to vote. This Why I Vote perspective reflects the opinion of Karla Amador, co-founder of the 52 Hike Challenge

Voting to me is important because I get to take a stand for what I believe in and have my voice heard. In the past, I have organized phone calls to my constituents in helping to get a bill passed. I have informed friends, family and people in my community about measures they may not fully understand.

I also feel extremely passionate about protecting our public lands and want to do what I can to conserve these places.

I know sometimes it’s easy to get discouraged and feel like one voice doesn’t matter, but in the grand scheme of things, it does. … Think about what could happen if every ballot was counted? I know that as a Latin American woman, I feel privileged to vote and be the example for future generations.
