When you think of supportive running gear, your mind probably goes straight to shoes. But whether you’re easing into your first miles or gearing up for a race, there's another essential piece of athletic wear that plays a major role in how you feel on the move: your bra. A well-designed sports bra can make a big difference in comfort, support and performance—all important factors when you’re participating in this often high-impact and high-intensity activity.Â
Shopping for a sports bra for running can be overwhelming, since sizing can be inconsistent across brands and descriptors like "low profile" (meaning less coverage across the chest and shoulders) and "compression" (meaning that the bra will squeeze you a bit for added support, feeling tighter across the chest) making it hard to know what to prioritize.Â
Plus, there’s the question of impact, or the relative intensity of your chosen activity. In this guide, we list high impact, medium impact and low impact bras.Â
High-impact sports bras: for high intensity activities like running and HIIT workouts, and often the most supportive for larger tests with cup sizes DD and up and/or band sizes 36 and up.
Medium-impact sports bras: These can vary in their suitability for activities of different intensities, but will work best for moderate-intensity cardio like recovery runs, long hikes, and cycling, and for low-intensity activities for larger chested people.Â
Low-impact sports bras: for yoga, pilates, walking, and bike rides. Smaller chested people can get away with wearing these on for moderate- and even high-intensity activities like cycling and running.Â
Ultimately, the best sports bra is the one that works for your body and your performance. To help narrow down the field, our group of 15 REI Co-op Member-testers tried a variety of sports bras during activities like running, Pilates, cross-country skiing, indoor cycling and everyday wear to determine what works best for different breast sizes and what's comfortable and stylish. Here are their favorite sports bras for running, available from the co-op.

High-Impact Sports Bras
Panache Sport Sculptresse Activate Wired Sports Bra
Score 98
Fabric 48% polyamide/40% polyester/12% elastane
Bra support High impact
Support style Encapsulation
Strap style Combination
One of the hardest parts of shopping for sports bras is the ambiguous sizing. What does small, medium or large really mean when it comes to the wide array of chest sizes and shapes? The Panache Sport Sculptress Activate Wired Sports Bra takes the guesswork out of the equation, as it’s sized numerically, from 34E through 42G.Â
Panache Sports unique and highly sought after for its focus on larger cup sizes. The size range extends well beyond what many mainstream sports bras offer, making it a compelling option for athletes who often struggle to find comfortable yet adequate support. Our Georgia-based tester Sheeka S. was pleased with the size 42F fit: "It fit my ribcage and bust well for a firm hold that wasn't suffocatingly tight." No chafing, here!
This sports bra is particularly versatile—wear the two straps like a conventional bra, or use the attached hook to link them at the top for a crossback style. Texas-based tester Jill R. noted that while the crossback style provided more support, it was easier to remove the bra in conventional-strap mode.Â
No matter how you choose to wear your sports bra, there's nothing worse than tugging a sweaty one over your head after a long run. The Sculptresse Activate Wired bra solves this issue with a hook-and-eye back closure, which means you can put the bra like a regular bra instead of pulling it overhead. With three rows of three hooks each, you can get the fit you need and feel secure during an intense workout. Buy here.
Editor’s note: The Sculptresse Activate Wired Sports Bra is often in high demand and thus low stock, but we still included it here for its outstanding marks from testers and the important niche it fills for larger-chested runners and athletes. For an alternative that larger-chested REI customers love, try the Panache Sport Boundless Non Wired Sports Bra. For a similar pick to our top-ranked bra, try the brand’s newer Sculptress Thrive Anywhere High-Impact Sports Bra, and let us know what you think by leaving a customer review.Â
Bottom Line: The Panache Sport Sculptresse Activate Wired Sports Bra is a top choice for athletes with fuller busts who need serious support. Its underwire encapsulation design, adjustable fit and extensive size range provide excellent bounce control and shaping.
Testing Stats:
- Activities tested: Hiking, running and strength training
- Testing locations: Georgia and Texas
- Best testing story: Jill R. sang the praises of this bra as a larger-chested runner: "I've actually been known to wear two sports bras to completely eliminate bounce—I hate any bounce—and this bra is a winner. My breasts and the bra don't move around. It's a very nice, snug fit."
RHONE Instinct Longline Bra
Score 82
Fabric 62% polyamide/38% elastane
Bra support High impact
Support style Compression
Strap style Tank top
Our testers and many customer-reviewers agree that the style of the RHONE Instinct Longline Bra makes it a distinctive option. It’s longer, reaching down to the upper torso—ideal for those who prefer to wear their sports bra as a cropped top. The shelf bra with removable pads provides high support for smaller cup sizes (A-B) and moderate support for larger cup sizes (C-D), which is typical for a compression-style bra. For larger cup sizes, DD and up, we recommend the Panache Sport Sculptresse Activate Wired Sports Bra.
Made from a blend of elastane and polyamide, the Instinct Longline Bra has the right amount of stretch and structure for a comfortable fit. "I LOVE the material on this bra," shares REI product copy editor and Washington-based tester Yitka Winn. "It feels like a really high-end fabric, with minimal seaming and a supersmooth feel on the skin. I'm someone who's often struggled with chafing from bras, particularly on really sweaty runs, and I did not experience that at all with this bra."
The longline cut adds a smoothing effect across the torso, which many people find both flattering and practical to wear as a top on its own. The band extends lower down the torso, helping to disperse pressure. Anti-odor technology and a perforated hem also suggest this bra is a good fit for serious training.Â
While the tank-style strap design earns positive marks for style, some reviewers note that adjustable straps would go a long way toward improving the fit. In addition, our Colorado-based tester Courtney H. found that the thin straps created pressure points that could be avoided with wider straps. Buy here.Â
Bottom Line: This high-support, tank-style bra that doubles as a workout top is ideal for smaller cup sizes and for low-impact workouts.Â
Testing Stats:
- Activities tested: Running, indoor cycling, strength training, mountain biking, pickleball
- Testing locations: Colorado and Washington
- Best testing story: Despite a distaste for crop tops, Winn shared: "I wound up being pleasantly surprised by this bra on a lot of fronts, most especially the wonderfully luxe material and the fact that this provided significantly more support than I thought it would at first glance (or even first try-on, before I actually began exercising)."
Medium-Impact Sports Bras
Oiselle Flyout Bra
Score 96
Fabric 78% polyester/22% LYCRA spandex
Bra support Medium impact
Support style Compression
Strap style Tank top
Specializing in women's running apparel, Oiselle (pronounced wa-zell) may just be the ideal brand to look to when shopping for running sports bra. Enter the Oiselle Flyout Bra. Its super-comfy fit, highly supportive structure that reaches even beyond medium-impact capabilities, and sleek, stylish and functional design scored top marks across the board, earning the bra an Editors' Choice Award in 2026.
The Flyout Bra was designed with trail runners in mind, with wider straps that prevent digging in the shoulders when worn under a hydration pack. South Carolina-based tester Katie E. commented: “The wide straps and larger coverage area seemed to support my back and shoulders and allow for good running form."Â
A pullover tank-top style with a higher neckline and a wider chest band, mean the Flyout is more supportive for C/D cup sizes than the typical fare. Removable cups let you adjust to the level of coverage you prefer. The straps are not adjustable, but REI store sales specialist and Illinois-based tester Kimmie Hamilton found that they "stayed in place surprisingly well with no slipping." Even larger cup sizes may be able to make it work, too, with the versatile coverage options—sizing supports up to a 40 band.
The center-back phone pocket is a favorite feature among wearers, and runners can even pack it with a water flask or energy gel packs if needed. And while some runners may find the fabric thicker than they’re used to in a sports bra, our testers found the material breathable and the bra easy to remove even after a sweaty run. Buy here.
Bottom Line: The Oiselle Flyout Bra is a standout option for runners—especially trail runners and hydration-pack users—thanks to its wide, comfortable straps, supportive high-coverage design and versatile center-back pocket.Â
Testing Stats:
- Activities tested: Trail and road running, yoga and strength training
- Testing locations: Illinois and South Carolina
- Best testing story: Hamilton put the removable padding to the test: "At one point after I washed the bra, I forgot to put the pad back in on one side and didn’t notice at first—until I realized the right side had a little bonus bounce while the left was locked in. So yeah, I was out there half-padded, slightly uneven, and still having a great run—and the bra mostly had my back."
Oiselle Hi Twenty Bra
Score 93
Fabric 76% polyester/24% spandex
Bra support Medium impact
Support style Compression
Strap style Racerback
As previously noted, Oiselle is worth considering when looking for the ideal running sports bra due to its focus on women's running apparel. The brand's Hi Twenty Bra's minimalist construction helps reduce friction—an important detail for runners logging longer miles—though it's not without small fit quirks. California-based tester Tammy T. noted some slight bulging where the straps meet the lower portion of the bra, suggesting the design may not lie perfectly flat on every body type.Â
The pullover style keeps things simple, while a mesh back panel adds breathability, helping to manage sweat during warm runs or higher-effort activities. Minnesota-based tester Catherine J. found it supportive enough for running and appreciated the flattering silhouette, which gives it a bit more style appeal than your average basic sports bra.Â
That said, simplicity comes with tradeoffs. This sports bra is best suited for cup sizes up to C, as the medium support might not be enough for larger cup sizes. There are no adjustment points for the straps or the band, so dialing in the right fit depends entirely on choosing the correct size from the start, something that may require careful attention to the brand's sizing chart. The removable cups are another mixed bag; while they offer optional shaping, Tammy pointed out that having to readjust them after each wear can be a hassle, and expressed a preference for them to be sewn in for more consistent support. Buy here.Â
Bottom Line: The Oiselle Hi Twenty Bra is a comfortable option that works well for smaller cup sizes and low- to mid-impact activities.Â
Testing Stats:
- Activities tested: Running, HIIT workouts, yoga, strength training
- Testing locations: California and Minnesota
- Best testing story: Catherine became a true fan after testing this bra: "This bra makes me want to throw all my old sports bras away!"
On Performance Bra
Score 88
Fabric 65% recycled polyamide/35% elastane
Bra support Medium impact
Support style Compression
Strap style Racerback
The On Performance bra sits squarely in the "sleek, minimal, do-everything" category of sports bras. It is designed for medium-impact activities, with a compression-style fit that holds everything close to the body rather than separating and structuring like an encapsulation bra. Adjustable straps help you get a good fit, though all three testers found the band quite tight, even when ordering their usual size.Â
What stands out most is the fabric and construction of the Performance Bra. It uses a stretchy blend of polyamide and elastane, built to wick sweat and dry quickly. There's also light padding in the cups and a slightly higher neckline, providing more coverage than typical sports bras. The overall feel is intentionally lightweight and streamlined, with Virginia-based tester Kinsey G. noting that the fabric felt extra soft and provided good moisture wicking: "The best part about this bra is right above the elastic band in the front is a woven wicking material to allow air flow. This really cuts down on trapped sweat and provides a much more comfortable workout experience." Buy here.
Bottom Line: The On Performance Bra is a solid pick if you want a clean, versatile sports bra that balances comfort, breathability and moderate support for activities like hiking, easy runs, and indoor cycling.
Testing Stats:
- Activities tested: Running, hiking, HIIT, indoor cycling, Pilates, yoga
- Testing locations: Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia
- Best testing story: Kentucky-based tester Rachel S. found this bra was supportive during a variety of workouts: "It performed well in my HIIT and Tabata workouts that included jumping, lunges, burpees, etc., while also performing well during my yoga class, which always includes inversions."
Low-Impact Sports Bras
Patagonia Maipo Low-Impact Bra
Score 90
Fabric 81% NetPlus postconsumer recycled nylon/19% spandex knit with miDori bioSoftÂ
Bra support Low impact
Support style Compression
Strap style Combination
Made with Patagonia's soft, quick-drying recycled fabric, the Maipo Low-Impact Bra is built for comfort-first activities, from hiking and backpacking to yoga and everyday wear. "This bra feels like butter," shared our New York-based tester Niaome H., and it was "very smooth and comfortable on the skin with minimal irritation." Adjustable straps that can be worn vertically or crossed help you get the fit you want.Â
While this sports bra does not offer the compression and shaping needed for high-impact activities, users with up to D cups found the support sufficient for activities such as yoga, hiking, walking and backpacking. However, for larger-sized wearers, Niaome found the material under the armpit to provide insufficient coverage—you may find yourself spilling out of the bra slightly during inversions in yoga or while running.Â
Our Idaho-based tester Jasmine S. put the Maipo bra to the test over 10 straight days of wear without washing and found it extremely comfortable. The small half-moon cutout on the bottom front panel allows ventilation to reduce sweat pooling, and the bra's HeiQ® Pure odor-control treatment keeps odors at bay. Buy here.
Bottom Line: The Patagonia Maipo Low-Impact Bra stands out for its exceptional comfort and thoughtful features, including adjustable straps, ventilation, and odor control—ideal for wearers up to a D cup on hikes, walks and more.
Testing Stats:
- Activities tested: Cross-country skiing, walking, running, hiking and yoga
- Testing locations: Idaho and New York
- Best testing story: Niaome put the Maipo Low-Impact to the true test: "Running around after my toddler, I forgot I had this bra on."
On Core Bra - Women's
Score 80
Fabric 59% recycled nylon/41% elastane
Bra support Low impact
Support style Compression
Strap style Racerback
Designed around simplicity and comfort, the On Core Bra offers low-impact support in a streamlined racerback style. The fabric blend of recycled nylon and elastane is soft, stretchy and quick-drying, making it well-suited for activities like walking, strength training and yoga. "It feels like an upgrade to the standard cotton sports bra," one that will be "a staple piece of run gear that will be in my drawer for years," according to California-based tester Dariel S.
The Core Bra relies on a pullover design to create a smooth, distraction-free fit, with a higher neckline that our testers appreciated. "I like the way this bra achieves compression simply by its form without extra bells and whistles," shared Colorado-based tester Courtney H. "It doesn't snag or bulge anywhere. The bra might not be as sexy as others out there, but I always wear a shirt over my sports bra, so aesthetics are less important to me than functionality."Â
One limit is the lack of adjustability. Because there are no hooks or adjustable straps, testers recommended sizing up for a more comfortable fit, especially around the band. Buy here.
Bottom Line: The overall sentiment from testers is that the On Core Bra is a versatile sports bra that prioritizes comfort, quality materials and a clean, minimalist design.Â
Testing Stats:
- Activities tested: Road and trail running, walking, jumping rope, yoga
- Testing locations: California, Colorado and Illinois
- Best testing story: Courtney found the Core bra held up even during high-impact workouts: "If a sports bra can prevent uncomfortable breast bouncing while jumping rope, it gets a high score in my book."
Buying Advice for Sports Bras

There's so much that goes into selecting the best running sports bra for you, including support type and level, strap style, sizing, fabric, features and more. For more information, check out our article How to Choose a Sports Bra or read on for a quick rundown.
- Support style You'll see three styles of support with sports bras: compression, encapsulation and a combination.Â
- With compression, the sports bra is typically pulled over the head, compressing the breasts against the chest. This style doesn't have sewn-in cups, so it might not provide enough support for those with larger chest sizes. The Oiselle Flyout Bra, Oiselle Hi Twenty Bra, and On Performance Bra are compression bras ideal for medium-impact recovery runs and fitness classes, as well as low-impact cardio. At the same time, the RHONE Instinct Longline Bra can be a good option for higher-impact activities like running workouts and HIIT, while the On Core Bra and Patagonia Maipo Low-Impact Bra are top picks for low-impact needs like hiking and yoga.Â
- Encapsulation bras keep the breasts separated using sewn-in cups. This style of bra typically provides minimal compression and so is often designed for lower-impact activities. However, the Panache Sport Sculptresse Activate Wired Sports Bra on our list (as well as other bras from Panache Sport) is a high-impact bras that will work well for your runs and for larger cup sizes.Â
- Compression/encapsulation: Some sports bras use both encapsulation and compression in their design, helping ensure a secure fit and keeping the breasts separated to prevent chafing. These will be the most versatile bras, working for a range of cup and band sizes for high-impact activity.
- Bra support type Those looking for a sports bra specifically for running will typically want one designed for medium- or high-impact activities like the RHONE Instinct Longline Bra and Oiselle Flyout and Hi Twenty bras. Runners with larger cup sizes will want higher support to prevent their breasts from moving while running, like with the Panache Sport Sculptresse Activate Wired Bra. A wider chest band and thicker straps can help improve support. Low-impact bras like the Patagonia Maipo Low-Impact Bra and On Core Bra may work for very small-chested runners, and for runners up to a D-cup during lower-intensity activities like hiking, walking, and yoga.Â
- Strap style Most sports bras have straps that fall into two categories: racerback or traditional. There are also combination strap styles.
- With a traditional strap style, you can expect two separate straps with some adjustability. The tank-top style of the Oiselle Flyout Bra and RHONE Instinct Longline Bra falls into this category, though they lack adjustability.Â
- Racerbacks, such as the Oiselle Hi Twenty Bra and On Performance Bra, must be pulled over your head and usually aren't adjustable.Â
- Some running sports bras, like the Panache Sport Sculptresse Activate Wired Sports Bra and Patagonia Maipo Low-Impact Bra, are a combination style, meaning they can convert from a traditional style to a racerback.
- Sizing Sports bras are either sized using traditional band/cup sizing or S/M/L sizing. In either case, knowing your band and cup sizes is important when purchasing a running sports bra. Most pullover styles use S/M/L sizing and include a conversion chart that tells you what size to buy based on your band/cup size. You need a tight enough fit to prevent movement and chafing without feeling too constricted.Â
- Fabric There are many types of fabric available when buying sports bras. Consider your arm movements and whether the fabric feels soft against your skin. Moisture-wicking fabrics like polyester and nylon help decrease sweat retention and maintain overall comfort. Read more: How to Care for Your Sports Bra.Â
- Additional features Sometimes it's the extras that make a simple garment like a sports bra become a favorite. Some, such as the Oiselle Flyout Bra, include phone pockets which many wearers find helpful for carrying phones, gels and even ice packs. Hook-and-eye back closures can make taking off your sweaty sports bra easier. Underwire can be particularly helpful for providing support for runners with larger breasts.Â
How We Test
In the spring of 2026, we enlisted REI Co-op members and contributors from around the country to try out the best running sports bras currently available at the co-op. Our testers wore a variety of sports bras on long runs, to yoga and HIIT classes and to numerous indoor cycling sessions to rate each bra's performance.Â
After four- to eight-week stints, our crew rated the running sports bras in five categories: comfort, fit, support, breathability and quality. Testers ranked their bras in each category on a scale of 1 through 10. We tallied the data and calculated the average, adjusting the chosen score where written feedback qualified it. The seven running sports bras included here are the highest-scoring bras in our test, and the scores are their averages, converted to a 100 point scale.Â
The Panache Sport Sculptresse Activate Wired Sports and Oiselle Flyout bras scored the highest in all categories, earning the Oiselle Flyout an Editors' Choice Award in 2026. (Because of limited stock, the Panache Sports Sculptresse did not qualify for an award, but remains in high esteem amongst our testers.) Both bras work well for a variety of shapes and sizes, with the Sculpteresse Activate Wired earning extra points for fit among a wide range of larger bra sizes rarely offered by other brands. The Oiselle Hi Twenty and Patagonia Maipo Low-Impact bras scored well in most categories, especially comfort, support, and quality, earning them high ranks, too. The On Performance and RHONE Instinct Longline bras were enjoyed by testers primarily for their fit and quality, making them solid choices, especially for athletes up to a D cup. And the On Core Bra earned consistently solid marks too, particularly as a versatile, no frill low-impact bra that will work well for your day-to-day activities.
We will continue to test more bras sold at the co-op on a rolling basis. Once feedback is in, we will update.
