Camp Recipe: French Toast Sticks for the Kiddos

A perfect grab-and-go treat, these French toast sticks are a great kid-friendly breakfast idea to try out on your next family camping trip.

If you have active kids, you know how difficult it can be sometimes to get them to sit down at the table for breakfast. Now try doing that with all the extra stimulation that comes along with a family camping trip. You might as well just throw the idea of a calm and orderly breakfast right out the window!

So instead of trying to serve a traditional sit-down breakfast while camping, perhaps a more “dynamic” meal experience would better fit the occasion These French toast sticks are easy to make and can be enjoyed at the table or on the go. So your kids can grab a few bites and get right back to exploring. The other benefit of serving something that’s eaten in hand is fewer dishes! So really it’s a win-win for everyone!

The trick to making these French toast sticks is starting with slightly stale thick-cut bread. The thicker the better, which gives them rigidity and structure. Pan fry both sides in butter is a great way to start, but if you want to go above an beyond, you can also toast the sides as well. And of course, a small cup of warmed maple syrup is an absolute must!

So if you’re stumped on what to serve your kids for breakfast when camping, give these quick and easy French toast sticks a try!


  • 4 slices Texas toast (or other, thick-cut bread)
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Berries, maple syrup for serving


  • Cut the toast into 1 ½ inch sticks.
  • In a shallow bowl or container, beat 2 eggs until thoroughly combined. Add the milk, sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Mix to combine.
  • In a nonstick pan over medium heat, warm a tablespoon of butter.
  • Dip the toast into the egg/milk mixture, letting the toast absorb the liquid for a few seconds, then flipping and soaking the other side for a few seconds. Lift out of the mixture and let the excess drip off. Place in the pan. Repeat with the other toast sticks. You should be able to fit about half of the sticks in a 10 or 12-inch pan.
  • Once the toast is golden on one side (about 3 minutes), flip and cook the other side for an additional 2 minutes or so. Remove and set aside.
  • Heat the second tablespoon of butter and repeat the process until all the toast sticks are cooked. Serve with maple syrup for dipping and fresh berries on the side. Enjoy!
