REI Co-op Sponsors Lael Wilcox’s Global Cycling Record Attempt

As ultra-endurance cyclist Lael Wilcox sets out to circle the globe at record pace, REI Co-op is proud to support her potentially record-breaking journey as title sponsor, fueling an effort that pushes the outer limits of human endurance and expands what’s possible for women in sport.

Wilcox, one of the world’s most accomplished long-distance cyclists, is just chasing her own record, she’s aiming for the fastest circumnavigation ever completed, period.

“Lael’s ride is extraordinary not just because of the ambition, speed and distance but the way she brings a community along with her,” said Paolo Mottola, divisional vice president of marketing at REI Co-op. “She reminds us that adventure can start anywhere and getting outside has a way of connecting us. We’re thrilled to support her as she takes on this global world record challenge.”

The ride begins June 7 in Chicago, Illinois and will span more than 18,000 miles across multiple continents; an unrelenting effort expected to take roughly 80 days.

A global ride rooted in purpose

Wilcox’s route stretches across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia before returning to Chicago. Each day, she is expected to ride long stretches, covering significant distance as she works toward the record.

This effort goes beyond the ride. It’s about pushing limits on and off the bike and expanding what’s possible outdoors.

As the founder of Anchorage GRIT, a youth cycling program in her hometown of Anchorage, Alaska, Wilcox is helping empower the next generation of girls, trans, and non-binary youth to step outside and build confidence, community, and a spirit of adventure.

Real-world testing of gear and storytelling
