Film Screening: Marcus & Me, Connecting with Nature in the Steel City
Registration not required
Overview
Join an event that reimagines what outdoor adventure can look like in the heart of Pittsburgh. Produced in collaboration with the Outdoor Inclusion Coalition and the Redford Center, the film Marcus & Me showcases climber and OIC mentor “Big” Marcus Schoffner showing “Little” Marcus how the city’s industrial-era walls, bridges, and overlooked infrastructure become places of movement, connection, and discovery. The film highlights what makes Pittsburgh special: a landscape shaped by industry, layered with history, and full of unexpected ways to experience the outdoors close to home. Marcus & Me is an invitation to see urban spaces with fresh eyes- the potential, claiming it, and building something lasting from it. Explore how outdoor recreation can thrive in cities, creating access, belonging, and community for people who may not have easy access to trails, parks, or wilderness. Be inspired by a vision of the outdoors that is local, inclusive, and often overlooked, and stay to enjoy the Q&A session following the film. About our speaker: Marcus Schoffner, a climber and community advocate with the Outdoor Inclusion Coalition, helps expand access to outdoor recreation in Pittsburgh. His work centers on showing how city spaces can become meaningful places for connection, adventure, and belonging. The OIC's work builds on the legacy of Alma Hillary, a civic leader who fought for Black and brown communities' right to the outdoors in Pittsburgh in the 1940s and 50s.
