Beneath the sunbaked ground of the Arizona thrives a surprising world of fungi shaped by rare monsoon rains, dramatic elevation changes, and a blending of ecosystems you won’t find anywhere else in North America. In this vivid, story-driven presentation, explore the mushrooms that call Arizona home. Through striking photography, detailed illustrations, and firsthand field stories, you’ll learn how to recognize key identifying features, understand the role fungi play in these fragile ecosystems, and approach foraging with respect, care, and safety. From prized edible finds to potent medicinal species and dangerously toxic lookalikes, this is your invitation to see the desert—and your next hike—in a whole new way. Please note: this presentation is for educational purposes only. Never consume foraged mushrooms without the guidance of a qualified expert and always be aware of the risks involved.

Notes

Hernan Castro is a passionate mycology expert whose work spans ethical foraging, medicinal mushrooms, and hands-on cultivation. His lifelong fascination with nature and botany led him to start Desert Alchemist, a Tucson based company known for crafting high-quality medicinal mushroom extracts. When he’s not in the lab, Hernan can be found guiding curious explorers through the Arizona Sky Islands, where he brings the hidden world of fungi to life on every foraging trip.
