REI Co-op welcomes Elk Grove community to grand opening celebration on July 25-26

Runnin’ for Rhett to receive a $10,000 grant as part of the store joining the community

Jul 8, 2025

Specialty outdoor retailer REI Co-op welcomes the community to its grand opening in Elk Grove, California starting July 25. A two-day celebration will include giveaways, an outdoor social with vendors and community partners, and more. As part of the REI Elk Grove grand opening, a $10,000 donation will be made to Runnin’ for Rhett, a nonprofit focused on fostering healthy communities through outdoor fitness.

At 22,127 square feet, the new store is located at Laguna Gateway at 9145 W Stockton Blvd, just off the State Route 99 at Exit 287. Outdoor enthusiasts will find expertise, apparel and gear for camping, hiking, cycling, running, fitness, paddling, climbing, snow sports, and more. The store will also feature a Re/Supply area stocked with gently used gear and apparel offered at great prices. For those who love cycling and snow sports, certified mechanics will tune and repair gear at the full-service bike, ski, and snowboard shop.

REI Elk Gove will open every day at 10am. The co-op will host an outdoor social with giveaways (while supplies last), music and more on Friday and Saturday from 9am-5pm. Local nonprofits in attendance will include Cosumnes River Preserve, Runnin’ for Rhett, and Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates. Outdoor brands participating in the outdoor social will include Altra, Backpacker's Pantry, Black Diamond Equipment, Brooks Running, Gregory Mountain Products, Hydro Flask, Mountain Training Network, Oboz Footwear, Nikwax, Nuun, Oboz Footwear, OOFOS, Osprey, Saucony, Salomon, Sea to Summit, Tailwind Nutrition, and Topo Athletic.

“We look forward to being part of the fabric of the outdoor community in and around Elk Grove, and helping everyone have an active lifestyle,” said store manager Rich Fox. “No matter your level of expertise or how you’re looking to get outside, our staff of friendly experts are excited to help you get ready for your next adventure.”

The REI Cooperative Action Fund will present a $10,000 grant to Runnin’ for Rhett as part of its grand opening celebration. Runnin’ for Rhett was founded in 2007 by Beth and Randy Seevers in memory of their son, Rhett, who passed away from cerebral palsy. After his death, the Seevers dedicated their memory of Rhett to utilizing fitness and moving to help others do what Rhett wanted to do so badly but couldn’t. Thousands have been inspired across Sacramento by the nonprofit’s vision for a healthy community. Runnin’ for Rhett hosts events year-round to support its free youth fitness program.

There are 22,200 REI members in Elk Grove and nearly 574,000 members in the Sacramento region. With the opening of REI Elk Grove, 12 stores will serve REI members and outdoor enthusiasts who live and play in Northern California. REI Chico opened last month. REI Sacramento is more than 12 miles away from REI Elk Grove.
