REI Co-op explores bringing back Garage Sales for members

Ten stores will host Re/Supply Garage Sales on Oct. 24 as the co-op learns how a beloved member tradition could work for today.

Inspired by the Garage Sales many members remember and love, REI Co-op is exploring how the tradition can return through a reimagined Re/Supply experience. The member-only events will take place at 10 stores across the country on Oct. 24.

Built around the co-op's Re/Supply program, available year-round in most stores, the events will feature discounted used gear, clearance products, gear trade-ins and opportunities for members to connect in their local outdoor communities. The pilot is part of our ongoing effort to learn how REI can continue evolving the membership experience.

For decades, Garage Sales were a beloved part of REI membership, bringing members together for the thrill of discovery, unexpected finds and the chance to give gear a second life. While the traditional events paused in 2020, members have continued to share their enthusiasm for the experience. This test is an opportunity to explore how a modern Garage Sale could complement REI's year-round Re/Supply program while helping the co-op learn what members value most.

“We've heard from our members that they miss Garage Sales, and we're always looking for opportunities to learn from what they value most,” said Clay Walton-House, vice president of Co-op Membership. “This pilot gives us a chance to reintroduce more members to Re/Supply while helping us understand which parts of the Garage Sale experience matter most today.”

The Re/Supply Garage Sales will be held at the following stores:

  • Albuquerque, N.M.
  • Atlanta, Ga.
  • Dallas, Texas
  • East Hanover, N.J.
  • Manhattan Beach, Calif.
  • Northbrook, Ill.
  • Rockville, Md.
  • Sandy, Utah
  • Sunnyvale, Calif.
  • Tacoma, Wash.

Members attending the events can expect:

  • Newly available Re/Supply inventory
  • Discounted used gear and clearance products
  • Opportunities to trade in eligible used gear for an REI gift card
  • 20% off one Re/Supply apparel or footwear item during the event
  • A free tote with a qualifying Re/Supply or clearance purchase, while supplies last
  • Light refreshments and an event experience designed to help members connect with Green Vests and their local outdoor community

The events are open to REI Co-op members. Nonmembers may purchase a $30 lifetime membership to participate.

Because these events are part of a pilot, REI will gather feedback from members and store teams to learn what resonates, understand how the format works in stores, and inform decisions about what comes next.
