Cooperative Action: REI Co-op launches new platform to drive positive change through collective action
Apr 14, 2021
Throughout our history, REI Co-op has been committed to bringing people and nature closer together in pursuit of a life well lived. Continuing a legacy of environmental stewardship and cultural impact, we’re taking the next step by inviting our nearly 15,000 employees, 20 million members and everyone in our community to take action on climate change and equitable access to the outdoors. Together we can create a future where the power of the outdoors is available to every person, where all feel safe and welcome, and the health of our planet is protected for generations to come.
Cooperative Action is how we get things done.
Our inaugural program, the Cooperative Action Network, is a grassroots advocacy toolkit that builds on the co-op’s decades of policy and advocacy work and gives everyone in our community an easy way to take a stand on policies and legislation that impact the outdoors. Our policy-specific work through the network is focused on three priority areas: climate action, outdoor equity, and the places we love (from National Forests and other public lands to nearby nature like your neighborhood park). The network enables everyone to take a stand—and raise a voice in the movement to protect and share life outdoors.
Here are some ways to take action through the network:
- Email Congress: Contact the elected representatives directly responsible for voting on key issues
- Sign petitions: Show support for the changes you want to see, together with thousands of names beside yours
- Receive action alerts: Get notified when there is action to take, so you never miss a chance to make an impact
- Share on social media: Share your passions with your immediate network to build awareness and add voices to the cause
Lasting impact starts today.
As we identify meaningful ways to address climate change and its disproportionate impact on communities of color, we see opportunities within our own walls. Through Cooperative Action, we can close the loop by keeping good gear in use. The repair and sales of used clothing and equipment will help us reduce our collective footprint together, diverting millions of items away from landfills.
In the months to come, we will continue to share ways we can all get involved. There’s never been greater potential for humans to rally around shared goals and ideals. The spirit of a co-op is grounded in common good, and that unified spirit can create positive change in a world that needs it now. This is our moment.
Let’s get things done. Together.
