Beyond the Cuteness: Understanding Baby Wildlife Needs

It’s easy to want to help when you spot a baby animal alone in the wild, but good intentions don’t always lead to the best outcome. This engaging in-store presentation takes you beyond the “aww” factor and into the remarkable realities of how young wildlife are raised. Learn how different species care for their young, why some babies are meant to be left alone, and how nature’s strategies can look misleading to human eyes. You’ll gain practical insight into how to tell when an animal truly needs help versus when it’s simply waiting for a parent nearby, and why intervening too soon can do more harm than good. The session also explores how accidental wildlife “kidnapping” happens, what to do instead, and how to observe responsibly. You’ll leave with clear guidance on when to contact professionals, plus simple ways to make your own backyard a safer, more welcoming place for native wildlife. This presentation is led by a representative from St. Francis Wildlife Association, a nonprofit dedicated to conserving north Florida’s native wildlife through hands-on rescue, rehabilitation, and public education. Their team brings real-world experience and a deep passion for helping people coexist responsibly with the animals that share our landscapes.
