Meet Florida's Terrestrial Turtles

From the sandy uplands to the freshwater springs, Florida is home to a fascinating variety of turtle species. This session will begin with a broad overview of all the terrestrial and freshwater turtles found across the state, highlighting what makes each group unique in terms of habitat, behavior, and adaptations. As we narrow our focus to Central Florida, you’ll learn about the species you’re most likely to encounter while hiking, paddling, or exploring local preserves. Nicole will share stories and insights from the field, helping you recognize and appreciate these often-overlooked reptiles in your own outdoor adventures. Participants will have the opportunity to examine real biofacts—shells, bones, and other tangible items that offer a hands-on connection to turtle biology. And yes, you’ll get to meet a few ambassador turtles up close! About our speaker: Nicole O’Brien brings a wealth of experience and passion to her work in environmental education. With a background in biology, she has spent much of her career working with government agencies and nonprofit organizations focused on conservation and public engagement.
