Mount Whitney is more than California’s highest peak—it’s a rewarding challenge that calls for thoughtful planning and preparation. If you’ve been hoping to stand at 14,505 feet, this in-store session offers inspiration, practical guidance, and a chance to connect with others in the hiking community. A local expert will walk through the full journey, including how to train for elevation, navigate the permit process, choose and fit essential gear, and plan food and packing for multiday backpacking. You’ll learn tips for safety, acclimation, and Leave No Trace principles, along with insight into the mindset that can help you take on one of the most iconic summits in the United States.
Notes
Is climbing Mt. Whitney on your bucket list? Come learn how to plan a safe and successful ascent of Mt. Whitney from veteran high altitude climber and mountain guide Kurt Wedberg, who has reached the summit of the highest peak in the contiguous United States over 100 times by 5 different routes. Kurt will present a multimedia lecture discussing trip planning and preparation, training, equipment, safety, routes, permits and options if you are not awarded a permit in the annual lottery, and photos of this iconic peak. Join us at REI Northridge for this very special evening as we host Kurt Wedberg, who has helped hundreds of climbers reach the summit of Mt. Whitney over the course of his 40+ year guiding career and knows this mountain like no one else.
