Mount Whitney is more than California’s highest peak—it’s a rewarding challenge that calls for thoughtful planning and preparation. If you’ve been hoping to stand at 14,505 feet, this in-store session offers inspiration, practical guidance, and a chance to connect with others in the hiking community. A local expert will walk through the full journey, including how to train for elevation, navigate the permit process, choose and fit essential gear, and plan food and packing for multiday backpacking. You’ll learn tips for safety, acclimation, and Leave No Trace principles, along with insight into the mindset that can help you take on one of the most iconic summits in the United States.

Mark Woods is a Columnist for the Florida Times-Union and has been recognized with the Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship. Woods' journey in the national parks began with a plan to explore the future of these parks, which evolved into a heartfelt exploration of family, legacy, and the healing power of nature. His book, "Lassoing the Sun," is a testament to his deep passion for the outdoors and his commitment to exploring the interplay between humanity and the natural world. In this presentation, Mark will be drawing on his experiences of backpacking Mount Whitney.
