Join Georgia Appalachian Trail Club leader Lynne Beeson for an inside look at the first 78 miles of the Appalachian Trail, including its iconic starting point on Springer Mountain, known for wide-open views and the sense of adventure it sparks in every hiker beginning their journey. Learn how GATC volunteers care for more than 138 miles of trail and backcountry infrastructure, keeping this rugged North Georgia landscape thriving for generations of hikers. Lynne will share what makes GATC-led outings special, from beginner-friendly Backpacking 101 trips in the misty blue layers of the Great Smoky Mountains to day hikes stretching from the Georgia coast to the rolling ridges near the North Carolina line. She’ll also highlight her work expanding access to the trail, building community partnerships, and protecting rare and sensitive ecosystems along the corridor. Whether you’re curious about volunteering, honing your skills, or finding your next great hike, this session will help you connect more deeply with one of the Southeast’s most treasured long-distance trails. About our speaker: Lynne Beeson is an experienced GATC leader dedicated to trail stewardship, conservation, and creating connections that welcome more people onto the Appalachian Trail.
