Fire Lookouts of Western Washington: Hikes, History, and How to Get Involved

Fire lookouts have stood watch over Washington’s forests for more than a century, perched on summits and ridgelines chosen for their sweeping views and strategic vantage points. Today, these historic sites make for unforgettable hiking destinations. In this presentation, explore some of Western Washington’s most compelling fire lookout locations through historic photographs, maps, and modern landscape images, and learn how these places shaped both forest protection and outdoor recreation in the region. With fewer than 100 fire lookouts still standing statewide, you’ll also hear how volunteers are playing a critical role in preserving these iconic structures and how you can get involved in restoration projects. About our speaker: Leslie has visited more than 500 fire lookout sites across the Pacific Northwest and beyond, blending firsthand exploration with deep research into their history. A longtime member of the National Forest Fire Lookout Association, she enjoys sharing the stories, mysteries, and ongoing preservation efforts behind these unique places.
