The Florida Everglades is one of the most unique and biologically rich landscapes in the United States. But this iconic ecosystem is under pressure from one of the most notorious invasive species on the planet: the Burmese python. Join Lead Scientist Mike Kirkland for a deep dive into how this apex predator arrived, how it reshaped the Everglades, and the groundbreaking work being done to control its spread. Mike will break down the scale of the challenge, the science behind current management efforts, and the innovative strategies that have made South Florida’s Python Elimination Program the most successful response to date. A Q&A will follow the presentation for anyone eager to learn more about conservation work happening on the ground. About our speaker: Mike Kirkland is the Lead Invasive Animal Biologist for the South Florida Water Management District and principal architect of the region’s Python Elimination Program. He has spent two decades working in Everglades restoration and invasive species management.
