Overview

  • Group size27 people

Southern Arizona is home to a remarkable network of rugged canyons shaped by desert floods, ancient geology, and dramatic seasonal shifts. This session offers an in-depth look at what makes canyoneering in this region so unique, highlighting the characteristics of local routes, the environmental factors that influence desert canyons, and the considerations experienced explorers keep in mind when traveling through these remote landscapes. Attendees will gain a deeper appreciation for how these canyon systems form, evolve, and challenge even the most seasoned adventurers. We’ll discuss how techniques like rappelling and anchor assessment, as well as problem-solving in remote environments, factor into the way experts move through technical canyon terrain. About our speaker: Jayci Ferrimani is a climber, guide, and founder of Arizona Climbing Guides. He brings more than two decades of experience exploring Southern Arizona’s backcountry. Jayci will share perspectives on canyoneering culture, the gear commonly used in technical descents, and how experienced canyoneers think about route planning and decision-making in desert environments. This presentation is designed to inspire curiosity and offer insight into these extraordinary places.
