Hill Country State Natural area contains over 5,000 acres of rugged canyons, scenic plateaus and tranquil creek bottoms. Escape from the bustle of modern life to a more relaxed time and place as we hike into primitive backpacking sites within this former Texas ranch turned State Natural Area. We'll cover 7 miles over two days spent trekking at an easy pace along creeks, grasslands, hilltops and canyons. During this overnight trip we'll explain how to choose and use equipment (including how to load and carry your backpack) to maximize your comfort and fun. You'll also learn about campsite selection, navigation/route finding, camp cooking, water treatment, wildlife precautions and Leave No Trace etiquette. Early Saturday morning you'll meet your instructors at REI Austin Downtown to review your gear and make sure you have what you'll need before we load our shuttle to the park (you may also choose to meet us at the park). REI provides transportation and the following gear: backpack, tent, sleeping pads, stoves, all cookware, trekking poles, water filter and food. Please note: trip includes 7 miles of hiking on uneven and sometimes steep terrain. This trip does involve moderate exercise.
