What happens when a straightforward winter hike turns into a 24-hour survival challenge? Join us for a gripping presentation that retraces a rare winter journey into Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA), where frozen lakes and fire-scarred landscapes set the stage for an unforgettable adventure. In February 2024, Martin Kubik and his hiking partner set out to reach a remote campsite on Arrow Lake—once accessible by canoe, now nearly unreachable due to flooding and regrowth. With minimal snowfall and frozen terrain, they seized the opportunity to make it happen—but when an unexpected emergency altered their return route, the hike became a test of resilience, navigation, and survival. Through photos and gear insights, Martin will walk us through the planning, challenges, and lessons learned from navigating wilderness in winter conditions. This session is perfect for anyone curious about cold-weather hiking, survival strategy, and the realities of remote travel in the BWCA. About our speaker: Martin Kubik is a lifelong advocate for hiking trails in the BWCA. He founded the Kekekabic Trail Club, the Boundary Waters Advisory Committee, and the Boundary Waters Heritage Trails. A former 3M employee, Martin also launched the 3M Outdoor Club and has spent decades promoting wilderness access and trail stewardship across Minnesota.
