Overview
- Group size30 people
This dynamic series celebrates New Jersey’s environmental legacy through the lens of activism, preservation, and community impact, exploring pivotal moments and local successes. Each session highlights a unique chapter—from statewide movements to the natural wonders of the Pine Barrens and the inspiring local triumphs in Evesham Township. All sessions are led by John Volpa, Founder of the Black Run Preserve and former Director of Education for Pinelands Adventures in Wharton State Forest. Part 1: Building a Movement - Pollution events galvanized public concern and ignited a nationwide wave of environmental activism leading to landmark federal legislation and the creation of nonprofits dedicated to protecting New Jersey’s natural resources. Learn how grassroots advocacy and public awareness transformed environmental policy and stewardship. Part 2: Serendipity - Explore industries that reshaped the Pine Barrens over the past 300 years—and the community responses that followed. This session culminates in a grassroots success story of local volunteers, leaders, and organizations (including REI) coming together serendipitously to build the improbable Black Run Preserve. Part 3: Headwaters & Housing - The Black Run Headwaters are the ecological key to the Preserve's overall health. The Pinelands Commission gathered public comment on a proposed amendment to reduce the residential zone near the headwaters - a contentious concept with several possible outcomes.
