Join us for an overnight backpacking trip where the piedmont meets the Blue Ridge, in beautiful Sky Meadows State Park. We'll traverse scenic woodlands and rolling pastures while taking in stunning views of historic Virginia farm country. Throughout, you will gain insight into the local history and ecosystems, while we keep an eye out for the critters that call this area home. To start, you'll meet your guide in Fairfax for a pack shakedown before heading to the trailhead in the REI van. There, your guide will explain how to choose and use equipment to maximize your comfort, safety and enjoyment on the trail. You'll also learn about route planning, campsite selection, outdoor meal prep, water treatment, wildlife precautions, and Leave No Trace etiquette. Please note that this trip does involve strenuous exercise, so participants should be comfortable traversing uneven terrain carrying a 35lb pack. An 8-mile round trip makes this the perfect introductory backpacking experience--or a great way for seasoned backpackers to see a new destination. REI provides all meals, backpacking gear, and roundtrip transportation from Fairfax.
