Join us for a classic North Carolina thru-hike on the Art Loeb Trail in Pisgah National Forest.

For the fit backpacker the Art Loeb trail is an opportunity to challenge the body and refresh the soul. On this five day thru-hike we backpack 30.1 miles, summit 6,000-foot peaks and cover 10,000 feet of elevation gain. Just a short distance from Asheville is Pisgah National Forest, a true outdoor lover’s paradise, and the home of the Art Loeb Trail. Named after Art Loeb, a hiking enthusiast and conservationist, the trail was envisioned in the 1960s to connect the rugged beauty of the Appalachian Mountains with Pisgah National Forest. As the first footsteps traced the route in the early 1970s, the Art Loeb Trail quickly gained acclaim for its challenging terrain and breathtaking vistas. The trail meanders through dense forests, across open balds, and over lofty peaks, providing a diverse and immersive experience for hikers. Over the years, it has become a symbol of North Carolina's commitment to preserving its natural treasures, with dedicated efforts from the Carolina Mountain Club and other conservation organizations. Today, the Art Loeb Trail stands not just as a physical pathway but as a testament to the enduring bond between humanity and the untamed beauty of the Appalachian Mountains.

This trip is designed for the seasoned and fit backpacker as each day pairs a significant amount of mileage and elevation gain.

Views from 6,000 feet in Pisgah National Forest.

Activities

This trip is rated Strenuous [5]. Each participant will carry a backpack weighing 30-40 pounds for 6-9 miles per day with elevation gains close to 3,000 feet in a single day at altitudes approaching 6,000 feet. We strongly recommend training with 30–45 pounds loaded in the backpack you intend to use for the trip and ensuring your hiking shoes or boots are well broken in before departure. Backpacking with a lighter pack weight is significant factor for comfort and success, detailed information will be provided upon registration. The total mileage is over 31 miles. This is not a beginner backpacking trip. All participants should be familiar with the rigors of backpacking, arrive in top physical condition and be prepared to spend 4 consecutive days backpacking in a remote wilderness setting with minimal amenities. We advise all group members to review your personal health and fitness.

With camp broken down and packs loaded we venture into the backcountry, leaving behind any non-essentials to be seamlessly shuttled to our journey’s end. Our legs find rhythm on a series of invigorating climbs towards Cedar Rock Mountain and finally descending into Butter Gap where we find our campsite. Along the trail, our knowledgeable guides share their passion for nature and history, weaving tales of the diverse flora and fauna that inhabit the pristine landscapes of Pisgah National Forest. Today’s challenging hike serves as a spirited warmup for the adventures that lie ahead. As the day concludes, we settle into a backcountry camp, savoring a hot meal beneath a canvas of stars. All meals included.

We warm up our legs on a short climb to Chestnut Mountain before gradually descending into a gap where we’ll rest before the long climb up Pilot Mountain. As we reach the peak, we’re rewarded with striking 360-degree views of Pisgah National Forest. Pilot Mountain’s spectacular vantage point made it an ideal spot for a historic fire lookout tower. This afternoon we gradually descend into Deep Gap where we’ll find camp for the night and relax with a hot dinner. All meals included.

Day 4

Black Balsam Knob, Tennent Mountain, and the Shining Rock Wilderness

We start early this morning because our route is jam packed with highlights. After hot drinks and breakfast, we break camp and set off towards the Blue Ridge Parkway. We have a gradual climb to the Blue Ridge Parkway, a great place to rest and reflect on how far we’ve come before the challenging climb to Black Balsam Knob. Reaching Black Balsam Knob is the highest point of our journey at 6,214 feet. Though Pisgah National Forest is now protected the grassy bald on top of Black Balsam Knob is a scar from extensive logging and two locomotive fires in 1925 and 1942. From Black Balsam Knob we continue to the neighboring 6,000-foot peak of Tennent Mountain before winding our way into the Shining Rock Wilderness where we find our camp for the night. This evening, we have the option to leave our packs behind and walk to Shining Rock, a large white quartzite rock outcropping visible for miles around where our guides will share stories of this area passed down by the Cherokee people. All meals included.

Today’s hike takes us through a challenging section called The Narrows before reaching the base of Cold Mountain.  After a short rest we descend towards the northern terminus of the Art Loeb trail where our van and extra gear await our arrival. Now that our thru hike is complete, we eagerly venture towards a celebration dinner at Sierra Nevada’s enchanting Asheville brewery.
