Let's make access to nature a priority for California.
Even though California generates more income than any other state from outdoor recreation, it ranks near the bottom when it comes to access to nature. In 2024, only half of Californians participated in outdoor activities and nearly a quarter - roughly 9 million Californians - lack access to a park within half a mile of their homes.
A growing movement to establish state offices of recreation has helped other states overcome barriers like these. In fact, 24 states have established an entity such as an "Office of Outdoor Recreation" to ensure residents can enjoy outdoor recreation no matter where they live, all while boosting local economic development and public health goals in their states. However, California has yet to do so.
Given the mental, physical and economic health benefits associated with the outdoors, Assemblymember Chris Rogers (AD 2) introduced AB 2578, the Outdoor Access and Recreation Economy Act, to support equitable outdoor access and build outdoor economies. Importantly, it allows for funding a state level entity like an office of recreation that is dedicated to promoting access and the continued health of California's outdoor economy and recreation jobs.
We need the California State Assembly to pass AB 2578 for a better future for equitable access to nature in California.
