Trading in Gear with Re/Supply
How do I trade in my gear?
We accept your gently used gear still in good condition and fully functional. There are two ways to trade in your gear – by mailing it to us or bringing it to an REI store.
To trade in at a store:
Bring the items you wish to trade in at any REI store. A staff member will evaluate your items, and if your items meet the program requirements, the store will take your items and you will receive an REI gift card. You can use our online product trade-in catalog to see what is eligible and how much your items could be worth.
To mail in your gear:
Start by finding your gear in our online product trade-in catalog.
Once you have selected the items you want to trade in, you will receive a pre-paid UPS shipping label via email. Pack your items up, attach the shipping label, and leave the package in your mailbox or drop it off at any UPS location.
Please double check that the items you select exactly match the items you wish to trade-in and that your items are free of any stains, tears, or broken pieces. If we can’t locate your items in our catalog or if your item is damaged, you may not receive gift card value for your items.
After we receive your trade-in, we’ll process the items and send you an REI gift card via email for all items that meet the program requirements. It takes 5-7 business days to get your trade-in processed. A small fee will be deducted from your gift card for shipping charges.
What kinds of items can I trade in via Re/Supply?
We accept gently used gear found in our trade-in catalog. We accept most brands and items that REI carries, including men’s, women’s, and kids’ clothing and shoes, as well as gear like sleeping bags, backpacks and tents.
Clothing we can’t accept includes any next-to-skin items like swimwear, undergarments, and base layers. We cannot accept any items that have been altered or modified (e.g., missing or altered care tags on bedding and upholstery) or items with corporate logos. We also don’t accept oversized items like kayaks or car racks at this time. If you aren’t sure if we accept your item, try searching for it in our online trade-in catalog.
Special guidelines for shoes: All standard components (e.g., insoles) must be included, and signs of heavy wear like foot imprints cannot be visible inside the shoes.
What condition do my Re/Supply items have to be in to receive a gift card?
We evaluate the condition of products against four grading criteria: excellent, lightly worn, moderately worn, and well worn. Evaluation of the condition of your items is up to REI’s discretion. If your items require any sort of repair, are heavily stained, or have broken or missing pieces, you will not receive credit.
- Excellent: Practically new; likely never worn outside
- Lightly Worn: Trail-tested a few times; minor wear visible
- Moderately Worn: Used for a season; visible wear
- Well Worn: Broken in; visible wear
All products will be processed and inspected for quality and functionality. Please note that once you have shipped your gear to us, we cannot return it for any reason.
How much money will I receive for the items I trade in via Re/Supply?
Eligible trade-ins will receive between 10%-40% of the original price of the item, based on the type of item and the original price point, in the form of an REI Gift Card. For mail-in trade-ins, $6 will be deducted from your gift card to cover shipping. To see how much your gear is worth, search for your items or browse by category here.
How will I receive credit for my Re/Supply items?
You’ll receive credit in the form of a digital REI Gift Card, sent to the email address associated with your membership. A valid email address is required.
Can I trade in items I didn’t buy at REI via Re/Supply?
Yes! You can trade in anything you find in our online trade-in catalog, regardless of where you bought it. Please make sure the exact color and style of your item matches the picture online, otherwise we may not be able to accept it.
Why didn’t I receive credit for some of my Re/Supply items?
If an item does not meet our quality standards, requires repair, is not in our catalog, or is otherwise ineligible, you will not receive gift card value for the item.
I’m not happy with my trade-in value; can I get my items back?
No. Evaluation of the condition and determination of trade-in value is up to our discretion. If the gear you send in is not eligible, or is outside of the categories we accept, we cannot offer you credit or return any items. Please pay attention to our estimated trade-in values when you submit your items, which should give you an idea of what to expect.
Where can I use my REI Gift Card?
You can use your REI Gift Card at any REI store, or online at REI.com, REI Outlet, or RE/Supply. For additional information on gift cards, click here.
When will I receive my Re/Supply trade-in gift card?
For trade-ins completed at an REI store, your electronic gift card will be emailed to you after the store accepts your items.
Please allow 5-7 business days from the time your trade-in arrives at our warehouse to receive your REI Gift Card by email. We receive many trade-ins and inspect each item by hand. We will do our best to issue your gift card as soon as possible.
