An inclusive society, inside and out.
Nearly two-thirds of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people in U.S. report experiencing harassment and discrimination in their lives. In dozens of states, LGBTQ+ individuals--including many of our members, employees, customers, and their families--face an onslaught of laws and measures that threaten their personal safety, the health and wellbeing of their families, and their professional and personal lives.U.S. civil rights laws protect people from discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, and religion. But they do not protect people from discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. We can fix this. The Equality Act would amend existing civil rights laws to protect LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service. It passed the House of Representatives last Congress with bipartisan support, but we need the new Congress to finally pass this essential bill.
Take Cooperative Action by telling Congress to pass the Equality Act today.
The Equality Act would provide consistent and explicit non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people across key areas of life, including employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally funded programs, and jury service. The Equality Act would amend existing civil rights law, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Fair Housing Act, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, the Jury Selection and Services Act, and several laws regarding employment with the federal government, to explicitly include sexual orientation and gender identity as protected characteristics. The legislation also amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination in public spaces and services and federally funded programs on the basis of sex.Additionally, the Equality Act would update the public spaces and services covered in current law to include retail stores, services such as banks and legal services, and transportation services. These important updates would strengthen existing protections for everyone.Follow the bill in the House

In 2025, more than 575 anti-LGBTQ+ pieces of federal and state legislation have been introduced, have passed, or are actively being considered. About half of the measures specifically target transgender individuals. Showing support for LGBTQ+ communities has never been more important or more urgent.
