Let's mobilize to protect America's public lands.
Every 30 seconds, America loses a football field’s worth of natural spaces to development and other pressures. Yet today, under the guise of an “energy emergency,” the Department of Interior is planning to fast-track drilling, mining and other energy development projects across our public lands. Its “emergency permitting procedures” will sidestep important opportunities for the public to weigh in, completing reviews in no more than 28 days. America’s public lands belong to the people. When managed for recreation, our public lands and waters provide enduring economic value for rural communities and Tribal Nations, all while ensuring clean air and water, ecosystem integrity and more. The U.S. already produces more energy than it consumes, calling to question why the voice of the people should be silenced for new energy projects. That’s why we’re calling on Congress to increase their oversight over the Interior Department and for them to pass the Public Lands in Public Hands Act, to at least prohibit the sale or transfer of our public lands.
We cannot stand by in the face of efforts to silence our voices. Join us in taking action, today.
Reintroduced by Reps. Ryan Zinke (R-MT) and Gabe Vasquez (D-NM), the proposed bipartisan bill would prohibit the Departments of Interior and Agriculture from transferring any federal lands over 300 acres if accessible by public road, public trail, public easement or public right-of-way or over five acres if accessible by public waterways, except under specific conditions or with prior congressional approval.
