Itinerary
Velkominn! Welcome to Reykjavik, Iceland’s colourful capital and the northernmost capital city in the world. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 3 pm this afternoon. If you arrive early, maybe spend the afternoon exploring downtown, home to boutiques, cosy cafes and art galleries. Visit Hallgrimskirkja Church for sweeping city views or head to the National Museum or the Settlement Exhibition and learn about Iceland’s Viking heritage or relax at Blue Lagoon’s geothermal pools.
After your welcome meeting it's time pick up your bike and cycle the scenic bike paths that traverse Reykjavik and the Capital Area. This is a very bike-friendly city and you will enjoy a relaxed 3 hour ride following the scenic waterfront and coastal paths past beaches, the old harbour, and many landmarks such as the Harpa Concert Hall, Sun Voyager, Grótta Lighthouse, and Nauthólsvík Geothermal Beach along the way.
Tonight, maybe head out with your group to try some Icelandic cuisine at one of Reykjavík’s acclaimed restaurants or grab a hot dog from the iconic Baejarins Beztu.

Depart from Reykjavik to Iceland’s famous Golden Circle. Begin at Thingvellir National Park, where shifting tectonic plates and rich Viking history set the stage. Next, witness the explosive power of Strokkur Geysir and feel the mist of the mighty Gullfoss Waterfall. After, set off on a short hiking adventure to Nauthusagil Canyon, one of South Iceland's lesser-known highlights, a moss covered narrow canyon with waterfalls. When you reach the top, maybe climb up and over the waterfall to get a view of a larger waterfall beyond. Then, head to Stori-Dimon. Here you’ll make the short but steep hike to the summit of this lonely mountain with panoramic views of the southern lowlands and the glacial river Markarfljot. Continue to your cosy cabin in Hvolsvollur for the night.

Why choose us
We’re adventure travel experts with decades of experience and proud to run trips in over 100 countries.
We keep our group sizes small and our experiences big, so you can get more out of your travels.
Leaders don’t just show off a destination, they’re the heart and soul of our trips.
The Intrepid Foundation gives back globally and our B Corp status is proof that we're dedicated to creating a positive impact.
Before you book you should know
- This is an active trip packed with cycling, kayaking and trekking activities. To fully enjoy all activities, you'll need a moderate level of fitness. It’s expected that travellers joining this trip will have had some experience hiking and cycling before and are able to swim.
- A remote location and high-performing currency are just two reasons Iceland can be an expensive destination. This affects things like museum entrance fees and outdoor activities but is especially noticeable when eating out. Your leader will be able to advise on ways to get the best value during your visit.
- The extremity of the weather makes for incredible scenery, but it also means Iceland can be very cold, especially at the start and at the end of the season and at night. Please bring appropriate clothing such as a down jacket, thermals layers, gloves and suitable footwear for trekking.
- On the rare occasion that your leader must alter the itinerary due to adverse weather, they will discuss the necessary changes and alternatives with you and offer alternative activities and routes wherever possible.
1. The welcome meeting on this trip is at 15:00 (3pm) - it is important you are on time as you will be cycling directly after the meeting.
2. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip and is subject to availability. The single supplement excludes Days 2, 3 and 4 (Shared cabins) where you will be in two-bedroom cabins with shared bathrooms. Each bedroom contains two twin beds. Please speak to your booking agent for further information
3. Iceland can be an expensive destination, especially in terms of eating out. In remote areas the only option for dinner will be at the guesthouse we are staying at. Stock up on food at a supermarket prior to arrival if you would like to opt out eating at onsite restaurant. Please make sure you read the itinerary carefully in order to know what is and what isn't included in the trip price. Your leader will be able to advise on how to save money.
4. Be sure to bring appropriate gear for this trip, including good waterproof hiking boots, rain gear, warm clothing and sun protection for hikes. Layered clothing is key to staying comfortable in Iceland.
OCCASIONAL ALTERNATIVE ACCOMMODATION
The style of accommodation indicated in the day-to-day itinerary is a guideline. On rare occasions, alternative arrangements may need to be made due to the lack of availability of rooms in our usual accommodation. A similar standard of accommodation will be used in these instances.
TWIN SHARE BASIS
Accommodation on this trip is on a twin basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. Please note there may be times where facilities will be shared rather than ensuite and rare occasions when you share a room with passengers travelling on different Intrepid trips than your own.
CHECK-IN TIME
Throughout the trip we request that our hotels prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time. However this isn't always possible which means we won't be able to check-in immediately on arrival at some hotels. Instead, we can store our luggage and explore our new destination.
PRE/POST TRIP ACCOMMODATION
If you've purchased pre-trip or post-trip accommodation (if available), you may be required to change rooms from your trip accommodation for these extra nights.
FACILITIES
Your accommodation may not always have private en suite facilities or air-conditioning. European hotels generally don't provide kettles or fridges.
The accommodation for the 3 nights in Hvolsvollur will be in two-bedroom cabins, each featuring one shared bathroom per cabin. Due to the limited availability of rooms at this location, single supplements are not available for these nights. Single travelers will be paired with another guest of the same gender to share cabin accommodations. On rare occasions you may be in a triple share cabin, but always with the same gender.
