Disclaimer: I've been wearing various versions of Merrell Chameleons exclusively since '04 for my everyday shoes.

When I tried on these Solomons, they were on the clearance table at REI in size 11.5. I was really impressed at the cushioning and forward momentum they provided, but didn't care for the excess looseness in the forefoot area and didn't buy them since I usually wear an 11. If I want to gain a little toe room for bulkier socks I'll go for an 11.5, but these shoes apparently run very roomy at the correct size. A couple of weeks later, I picked these up online for uber cheap with my dividend and 20% off coupon.

When they arrived, I had just gotten home from a business trip so I didn't inspect the size. The next day I just slipped them with light wool hiking socks, pulled the lacing system and went to work for a casual day. Friday turned out to be a great day to break-in these shoes b/c I had to run all over the campus of the university I work at to tie up lots of loose ends and then in the evening I took my son to a 4-H event 1½ hours away that had me walking on trails, gravel, and grassy surfaces. When it was all said and done, I had put in 14 hours while wearing these shoes for the first time.

Driving: The airy-ness of the tops of these shoes kept my feet very comfortable and the rounded heel is nice for an easy transition between the gas and brake pedal.

Urban surfaces: On most urban surfaces, my feet will sometimes get hotspots in other shoes when walking fast, but these shoes were nice and cool throughout. These shoes provide really good forward motion and are really cushion-y.

Sitting at the desk: Lots of toe room and I felt almost like I was wearing sandals.

Trail surfaces: At the 4-H event, I found myself wishing that the lacing system was a little more adjustable in the forefoot area, but these aren't trail shoes so I'm not going to complain about this aspect. Pulling the lacing system will snug up the shoe but will snug up more near the ankle than the toebox.

When I finally got home, the snubby toe made my wife comment about how small they made my feet look. I looked at the box and realized that I accidentally ordered these shoes a half size too small, but it turns out these shoes fit me perfectly with running socks or light wool hiking socks at 10.5.

Your mileage may vary, but if you want a great casual shoe for running errands around town, casual days at work, road trips, and traveling, I don't think you'll be disappointed with this shoe. Just keep two things in mind: First, this shoe gives up trail versatility for comfort, but once you walk around the city in these, you'll be ok with that tradeoff. Second, remember the sizing.
