    Arc'teryx Altra 65 Pack is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pivoting Hipbelt Great For Lower Back I was searching for the lightest pack I could find that could still handle a decent load. After extensive research-and a couple of returns-I found it in the Altra 65! An almost perfect pack. Having given the Altra 65 a couple of short wilderness excursions, including my most recent 25 mile trip, carrying about 39 lbs. to Yosemite's 10 Lakes Basin, I think I can give a fair assessment of this packs pros and cons. First off the "squeaking" shoulder strap that some people complain about, which was pretty persistent the first 5 miles of my trip. After stopping for lunch and then refitting the straps, I noticed a significant decrease in this somewhat annoying noise. The noise didn't really bother me-even at its worse-since I knew it wasn't just MY pack and others had experienced the same issue. The next day I hiked another 9 miles and hardly heard this sound again. I really think this is just part of the breaking in period for the pack with the rubber slots needing to wear a bit. Even if this problem persisted it wouldn't be enough for me to give up such a wonderful lightweight multi-purpose backpack! I really like the highly personalized fitting of the shoulder straps by way of a grid of various slots-which made it possible to get exactly the right fit for my shoulder width. This is something that can be tweaked with hardly any effort as one's load changes. Another perk is the extra-wide water bottle slot, which is perfect if you need to carry a Bear Canister (required in Yosemite) With my old Bora 80-or any pack for that matter-it is almost impossible to squeeze in with a full water bottle. with the extra-wide pouch I simple slid the CamelBak over to one side and the bear canister the the other. This makes sense from a weight distribution standpoint as well. I really appreciated the heavy-duty zippers on this pack (something I didn't find in any competitors). While the body uses a much lighter 220D Ripstop than it's heftier cousins, it is significantly more durable than any other popular pack on the market. This is not a cheap pack-and it is not made like one. First quality all the way. I found the side pockets to be deceivingly roomier than they appear, easily carrying a large fuel bottle, extra water bottle, fishing poles, fly reel, tackle and trekking poles. The micro daisy chain is handy to have and while the straps are much smaller than your standard issue backpack, they are ample for handling the load. I had this pack full and what I would say is weight capacity of 40 lbs, but it felt like a dream-virtually floating on my hips. I especially like the pivoting hip belt, which takes even the slightest hip movement off one's lower back. The easily detachable feature came in handy when loading for travel. Great lighter weight pack without giving up creature comforts. No unnecessary bells and whistles.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Awesome I haven't had it for long, but so far I'm in love with the Altra 65. The build quality is far above the TNF pack I was upgrading from. Once I got the pack adjusted correctly for me, it was super comfortable, and the rotating hip belt is definitely a nice addition. It sounded like it might be a gimmick, but it really does help me forget what I'm hauling around. I look forward to many adventures with this pack.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fine Backpack, but could be better The pack got here quickly, and REI worked hard to get it to me in time for a major trip. I loved everything I saw in the pack, and really enjoyed carrying it the first day. But the second day, one shoulder strap began to squeak, then the hip belt developed a small squeak. I wasn't too worried about the hip belt squeak, because a tube of lithium grease is provided for the rotating joint that holds the pack to the hip belt, and when I removed the hip belt and redistributed the grease it would quiet down. But the shoulder strap squeak was very loud and there was nothing I could do to get it to stop. The shoulder straps are held on by ingenious lug and t-slot joints and adjust easily, but the plastic to plastic joint would not stop squeaking. I reluctantly returned the pack to the store for a refund. If Arcteryx could get rid of the squeaks I would purchase another in a heart beat! Except for the noise it's the best pack I have every carried for comfort.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wonderfully Comfortable Pack, but Noisy I planned on using this pack to carry slightly heavier loads during the winter seasons. I loved the pack in every way, but once on the trail it began squeaking loudly in the right shoulder strap. The ingenious lug method of attachment of the shoulder straps also caused a persistent and loud squeak where the lugs attached. Arcteryx even included some lithium grease with the pack, but that was mainly for the rotating hip belt load bearing system, but the shoulder strap was the worse. I could not get it to be quiet so I returned the pack immediately. I would have given this pack a perfect 5 if it hadn't squeaked.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Quality BUT Squeaky I'am fairly new to backpacking. I brought the small size, I'am 5'7" and 165 lbs. I had to bring it back to REI . After hiking for about 15 minutes the disc on the waist belt began to squeak, which became annoying while walking. I checked to see if the grease thats supposed to be on the disc was there and it was. It seems that Arc'teryx can not get this right, it's been an issue for a while now. I was very disappointed I had to bring it back because I thought that this was a great pack otherwise. The reason I gave it 3 stars was because I think while in the woods you should not have to listen to loud squeaking but to the sounds of nature around you.
