Comments about The North Face Skareb 50 Pack - '09 Closeout:
I don't typically write reviews, but I noticed the only review on this website of this project was a bad one, so I thought I'd chime in here and state that was just one person's opinion.
I have gone on 2 to 5 day backpacking trips for 2 seasons now with this pack and it is still going strong. I'm not sure what the other reviewer was talking about in problems with the rubber back inserts giving him pain. I suspect they overloaded the pack, which causes the frame to bulge and the area that contacts your back protrudes into you. I figured this out the week before my first trip and learned to pack my gear properly. I do not see this as a design flaw, since over-stuffing it was never the intended design.
To the contrary, I actually found the back ventilation to be one of the highlights. 8 hours of blistering hot hikes a day and no back sweat! I was pretty impressed how I never got any sore spots throughout all my trips; I almost could not tell the pack was there. Previous packs I owned required a small period of "breaking" in. Not so with this pack, and the first trip out was a 4 1/2 day trip, loaded with 30lbs, and included about 8000 feet total elevation gain in 79 degree heat.
One thing to note, this is an extremely light pack, and in the 50 series space is a premium. I have managed up to 5 day trips with it though by carefully purchasing the proper compact gear and spending a few days prior to my trips figuring out the best way to pack all the items together. People are always amazed at how much I can fit in this pack when I go on trips. I would not recommend this pack for winter camping, since it'd be just about impossible to fit everything you need inside. For summer backpacking though it is a perfect lightweight companion. It is even light enough that you can use it as a summit pack if you took everything out of it and left them in your tent at base camp. Thanks for another great pack North Face.

The worst thing about this pack is its "rubber" back design. After two days my vertebrates were red and swollen and I was glad that I had finished my 50 mile loop around the Sisters in Oregon. No wonder North Face stopped producing this pack. Needless to say, I returned this item to REI.
