Whether you're logging miles on the trail or kicking back with a good book in the tent, the Mammut TR1 2-in-1 Headlamp/Lantern Combo light lets you choose the right kind of light for the task at hand.

4 LEDs utilize the Mammut Total Reflex Optics lens to focus light efficiently and evenly across your field of vision for excellent peripheral vision
Clip-on Ambient Light reflector converts the headlamp into a camp lantern that gives off a useful diffused light that's great for cooking, hanging out or reading
LEDs throw light up to 20m, an ideal distance for running, walking, hiking and use around camp
Ambient Light reflector also fits on the T1 and TXLite headlamps (sold separately); reflector weighs only 1 oz.
3 AAA batteries (included) provide up to 60 hrs. of use on low and 25 hrs. on high
Hold down the on/off button to switch to strobe mode; light blinks 1, 2 or 3 times to indicate battery status
Stretchy headband adjusts for a comfortable fit

The TR1 headlamp by itself is a superior light featuring clean, quality light that is friendly on your eyes; making for less strain on my eyes equalling a more comfortable experience in the dark.

I like to travel light and fast. Simplicity is an understood part of that strategy. The ambient light idea is so simple it leaves you wondering again, "Why didn't I think of that!?" The part connects literally in a "SNAP" to the headlamp and creates an illumination that allows me the ease of preparing food or night time reading. I hang it from the ceiling in my tent, and it allows me to move about freely. It weighs next to nothing, and is a great overall value and idea.

Tried this light last week on extended back packing trip. originally i was looking for a light weight backpacking lantern (i already had numberous headlamps) and saw the Ambient light (which is a combo headlamp/lantern) this allowed me to shave weight and space. The Ambient light was perfect in a tent..i was able to read, eat and cook just from hanging it up in the tent. the headlamp performed well.

Used the light for one day and then whenever I turned the on/off button on, the light was stuck in the emergency strobe light mode (could not even turn the light off again). It seems that the rubber piece above the switch is not designed well and was causing the problem. [...]

My wife and I each have one in our weekender packs one in each glove box and one in both our B.O.B.s. we also have 3-4 around the house for power outages. They are light weight, versatile, dependable, bright and long lasting. The headlamp is reasonably rugged and provides a soft light for evening trekking, reading… and a bright light for tying knots in your 2lb test, and spotting the critter that is making the unruly noise in the bushes outside your tent. With the attached diffuser, it becomes the perfect all around camp light for cooking, cleaning and leaving over your cat hole so you can find your way to the bathroom when your mountain house meal attacks you at 2 in the morning. (Not that I have any experience with that ;-) You would think that after buying 10 of these I'd give them a 5 star rating, but they are not perfect. They could be brighter, stronger, more rugged, and use CR123A rechargeable lithium batteries. However, if they were they'd be 2-3 times more expensive. Still (Mammut if you're reading this) I would buy more if they were better and I'd pay more too.

First: I was taken back when I first turned this on as it was not just bright but that it truly did what was advertised, which was: "use of optic lens to focus light efficiently and evenly across your field of vision for excellent peripheral vision". It's no exaggeration: EXCELLENT PERIPHERAL VISION! Simply put: I said: "WOW!"Second: Unlike my older headlamp, the initial push button to turn on the lamp sets it to the low/dim setting, so consider my surprise when the light got brighter when I was expecting it to get dimmer upon pushing the control button a second time! This lamp is SUPER bright, but again, I must say that all of the light is so evenly spread that it doesn't cause the "tunnel-vision" I've had with other lamps.Third: You know the old adage that all of your gear needs to have at least 2-functions to be really valuable? Well the added light diffuser that turns this lamp into a lantern is just plain and simple superior design. It works, is easy to use and I can't believe that all the other headlamps don't have the same feature; because it is just so "SIMPLE".I bought this set on sale for [$] and I can easily say it is one of the best values I've found at REI!

When I got this home my husband immediately tried to claim it. It is so cool! I ran across it while browsing and it wasn't hard to see all the great uses for it! The beam this head lamp puts off is a super bright, clear spotlight. You see everything up close and far away! I was sceptical with the whole lantern feature actually working but WOW!!! was I ever wrong. It has two settings, bright and super bright without being blinded! If you read at night, the soft light the lantern attachment provides is perfect in the ENO or tent. I'm especially excited about it being a perfect night light for the kids inside the tent at night. They all have flashlights but this illuminates the tent in a way that helps them feel completely comfortable while falling asleep. Just buy it, you won't have any regrets!!

Wow, most versatile light, The light by itself is really impressive. Really clear bright light. No big splotch of lite in the center and difussed light out from that. Put on the ambient lite globe and the perfect lantern for in the tent or the vehicle, cooking etc. Great innovation from Mammmut.

Got two of them. Used them for an mountaintop overnight with the little lady. She used hers to read in the tent while I cooked dinner over the fire. Worked like a dream!! So handy having a headlamp and mini lantern all in one unit. They were a steal at the price. No more gas lanterns for us! Popped the lantern part off for a midnight potty run, super handy. Takes the place of gear that weighs twice as much! Now all I need is my pocketknife and Ambient light TR1 combo to go camping!!

A useful light for very short trips unless you want to carry spare batteries. It is bright with brand new batteries but this light does NOT have a REGULATED output so the brightness dims along with the dropping battery voltage when in use. You get the initial brightness in the beginning but it declines from there. The diffuser is invaluable.
