Comments about Arc'teryx Arrakis 50 Pack:
I have this backpack as well as an Arcteryx Naos 85. They're both the best backpacks I have ever owned, and probably ever will! They are water resistant, and the only reason they're not waterproof, is that the zippers are not waterproof. You can leave it out in the rain over night and all your gear will remain dry, but you cannot throw it in a river and leave it there for an extended period of time.
I highly recommend this backpack over any other backpack on the market.

Comments about Arc'teryx Arrakis 50 Pack:
If you need this level of pack it is worth the expense. I used this on 4 packrafting trips recently with it hanging off the bow, plus a two day totally rained out backpacking trip and it was amazing. It weighs 4.5 pounds but by the time you add in a duck back and waterproof stuff sacks you break even with a lighter pack.
The question is do you need something this tough and expensive? If your an occasional hiker maybe not. But if you need DRY and don't want to wonder if your stuff is well cared for then this is the one. I am not sure what the guy was talking about who returned his, as this is as well constructed a pack as I have ever seen. If your a water person, ie raft packraft, canoe, hardcore out door guy this is it.
I maybe wish had bought the 65L model as with my packraft and a tent, sleeping bag, stove etc, I need to attach bags to the sides of the pack. But with its slender profile there is room. BTW, I also like the pocket configuration, with the two external to the main compartments. perfect for maps, etc. My only critique is if you put over 45 to 50 pounds in it and walk a long way you can start to feel the shoulder straps. But 40 pounds and under it feels like a dream. It feels a lot like the Arcteryx Needle which is super comfortable as well. If you don't have the dough for this model buy earlier models with the same fabric and you will get most of whats in this one.
Some favorite qualities of Arrakis:
Clean Profile
Main compartment side zip has not been compromised by elements
Good Strap Positioning
Hip belt rotation while bush wacking
Hope this review helps you.

Comments about Arc'teryx Arrakis 50 Pack:
I purchased this pack a couple of months ago and I have never had a pack fit so well. No more sore hips. Relatively light weight and the suspension is a breeze to adjust. Large enough for a 7 day resupply in the Sierras but will pack down for a weekend. I have heard complaints about no compression straps. Let your sleeping bag puff up the bottom and crank down on the roll top. One concern I have is the pivot hip belt does rub on the shoulder straps where they conect to the base of the pack. When I thru-hiked the PCT last year my friend had a Naos and he had the same problem being as the suspensions are nearly identical. But even after 2700 miles his straps where just a little worn. Still I took two, 4 inch long pieces of 1 inch tubular webbing and slipped them over the straps down to the base and stiched them on so they wouln't slide up and down. Simple fix, cheap and they are easily replacable. Another solid pack from dead bird.

Comments about Arc'teryx Arrakis 50 Pack:
This thing is awesome. Easily the best pack I have ever owned. This thing is super comfortable. The pivoting belt suspension makes a significant difference on felt load and comfort. I can carry much heavier loads and go faster because my hips never get saddle sore. Furthermore it is possible to keep the load on my hips where it belongs. This pack is great! There are other things. It is a clean pack with no extra doohikkie straps and pockets you don't know how to use efficiently. Did you notice, it is a dry bag? This is a serious pack that is smartly engineered and cleanly manufactured. I can't imagine what the previous poster could possibly be talking about.
My only concern is how long will the pivot device last. I can't wait to find out. Honestly, I think ArcTeryx hit a home run here. Super super super. I am certain that we now know how future packs will function. The pivot hip belt is just way too cool. Worth every penny.

Comments about Arc'teryx Arrakis 50 Pack:
I've bought many things from REI since the seventies and been satisfied, but my recent experience with the Arrakis 50 has been unfortunate.
I ordered one online, and when I got it home I realized the pivoting device had been rotated which caused the belt to tilt more to one side than the other. REI took it back without question and ordered another.
The second pack had a small rotation to the pivoting seat which I could live with. However, it had an odd smoky odor in the main compartment, and I found a plastic garbage bag stashed in the hydration sleeze. It, also, had some minor scuffs, and the information cards were zip tied to a strap, not on the zippper of the top compartment. All this indicated it had been used, and I returned it without question.
The third bag looked new and it even had the small packet of lithium grease in the top compartment. However, again the pivot seat was rotated so the belt tilted more to one side than the other. REI accepted it back willingly.
The offset in the tilt may not bother others. It is still largely functional, but for the money and reputation of ArcTeryx it just didn't seem right to me. I have an Arrakis 65 and a Naos 70, and the belts tilt evenly.
Make your choice.
