I don't know how it performs, only because I never could get it to mount to the bike. With plastic mounting piece off and the screw in place the screw was shorter than the mounting piece which explains why I could never get the screw to thread when the whole thing was together. One of the most frustrating DIY jobs I've ever attempted.
Not only would I not recommend this to a friend, I wouldn't wish it on an enemy.

I had a difficult time installing this, and it worked for a while. but It kept getting loose and eventually fell off. Going through the difficulty of installation again and again is too much so I have replaced it.

Worst bike product at REI. The clamp is frustrating, near impossible to install, the primary screw that bolts the unit to the metal ring is just not long enough to reach and thread on the first try... or even on the 10th try. battling with this thing was maddening. I work on my own bikes, i've installed all kinds of accessories on my bike, and a simple cage mount like this shouldn't be so difficult to manipulate. REI shouldn't carry Minoura accesories, just because they are made in japan does not make them superior. Why not carry the Topeak cage mount if REI carries so many other Topeak products? I returned these (for two bikes), ordered a couple Topeak mounts from[...]and installed each on my bikes smoothly on the first try. The Topeak design is similar, but superior, longer bolt designed to reach and thread into the metal loop effortlessly. Ive been and REI member for years and shop regularly, and this was the first time I walked up to the returns counter and said "these are junk, don't you dare try to sell these to someone else."

Got this to mount my daughters water bottle to the handlebars. It would not get tight enough to keep from slipping. Once I added a rubber washer to stop that it broke while tightening. Poor quality and a waste of money.

In New Mexico's arid climate you can never get enough hydration ("water"!) so I figured I would add this device so I could increase the number of bottle holders.

Yes, VERY difficult to install. A simple design, but lining up the bolt with the nut is very, very difficult. And, if your handlebar tapers, you have to mount it at the vey smallest diameter, or it will slip down in that direction and no longer be a tight fit. Trying to tighten it broke the metal strap, and I had to install the other one I bought. A costly learning curve!
I would recommend it to a friend who is very good with mechanical devices, and who is extremely thirsty much of the time.

At first, I was having difficulty mounting this. Figured-out that if one end of the metal loop/strap is bent at a slightly different angle away from the nut end, the mounting bolt will not catch the thread. When both ends are bent to be flat against each other, the bolt threads immediately and easily. Otherwise, it works great!

I was very frustrated trying to install this. I put it on the stem of my recumbent. It took over a half hour of fussing before I had it on right, but once on it is very stable. Several rides later it is still very securely attached.

Hi. Contrary to the other reviews i've read, i had no problems in attaching the mount to my bike. I am a long distance cycle tourist (currently en route from Alaska to Argentina). I have these mounts either side of my fork to increase my water carrying capacity. Also, have two others centered on the handlebars, on either side of the stem. At first, I just used hose clamps to secure the cages to the fork, but the cages are then subject to a lot of shock and vibrations while on dirt/gravel/singletrack. (I broke 3 alloy cages) These mounts seem to absorb most of the stress, and my cages have been fine since i started using them. They are a must for cycle touring, especially on rough roads or trails. And, the adjustable angle is nice. now my bike can carry 4 1L bottles and 2 1.5L bottles, no problem...

I AM A PRETTY HANDY GUY AND I CAN SAY THAT THIS PRODUCT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO INSTALL ONTO A BIKE. IT TOOK ME QUITE A WHILE TO ASSEMBLE WITHOUT INSTALLING JUST SEE HOW IT FUNCTIONS. I THEN ACUTALLY TRIED TO INSTALL IT ON MY BIKE AND WAS UNABLE TO DO SO. IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO LINE UP THE SCREW WITH THE HOLE ON THE BAND AND EVEN MOR DIFFICULT TO LINE THE SCREW UP WITH THE NUT ON THE BAND
