Comments about Kelty Beam 82 Pack:
This 5000 cu. in. pack performed great on a 9-day Grand Canyon backpacking trip. I carried a 75-lb load with ease. Highly recommended.
PROS: Three outer zippered pockets made it very easy to get at small things while on the trail. Down at the bottom of the pack, a zipper lets you get things at the bottom of your pack, like your sleeping bag or clothes.
PROS: The pack has two top covers, each holds gear which is where I kept the first aid kit, backcountry permit and health forms. I used the big one on this trip. The big one is detachable while the small one is not, so I kept the small one in its hidden pouch since I was using the big one.
PROS: I especially liked the strap arrangement which made the pack very adjustable. I could tie things on top, on either side, on the bottom or on the back. My sleep pad was on one side; my tent went on top. The strap at the top for my tent was an unexpected plus. My other packs don't have a strap at the top. They should.
PROS: This is a very cool backpack. The hip pad is just ginormous and fit my 36-inch waist very well. The frame is bowed outward such that the only points in contact with your body are at the shoulder and at the hip. My back stayed cool the whole time, with air flowing between my pack and my back.
PRO/CON: With the weight I was carrying, the hip pad at the small of my back rubbed me a bit raw there but never to the point of needing moleskin or a bandage.
PROS: I adapted quickly to the "Beam 82" suspension system. Those narrow trails with the mountain on one side and a sheer drop on the other were a tad scary. But the pack never shifted on me so I never had to worry about that. Now I did worry at first because the instructions said you should get used to the suspension first ... but as I spent more time with the pack, I realized that just was not an issue.
CONS: On occasion, the hip belt would not cinch up. I would tug on it to the extreme detent and it would never "catch." Now it would "catch" after many many tries but this was very annoying. Once, I noticed one of the rectangular metal buckles had flipped 90 degrees so the strap was being pinched there, but that never happened again, so it was not the cause of that problem. Strange.
CONS: Those igneus metamorphic Grand Canyon rocks tore up the bottom of the pack. Probably when I set it down on a rock to make it easier to put back on. The bottom has a dime-sized hole which I can fix with duct tape. As long as you don't slide it over sharp edged igneus rocks, you should be OK. I don't think any of my other packs would have gotten a hole, though.
CONS: The outer pockets are stretchable so you can squeeze in too much gear. The center pocket stretched so much that the seams busted, or stretched really too far, or maybe it was the stitching that busted. I like the stretchable fabric but think they could have put more backing on those seams. It looks like the fabric (or the thread?) the seams are sewn in just pulled apart ... which they did since they are stretchable. But they did not stretch back after I crammed too much stuff in there.
CONS: Very little documentation accompanies this pack. Most of the documentation is about the pack's "suspension system," which I did not care about as much as locating the security pocket or key holder. Found the key holder but not the security pocket ... it is supposed to have one.
BOTTOM LINE: Easy to carry large, heavy loads. Mde my part of the trip that much easier. I loved this pack. Highly recommended.
