The Cafe Lid does precisely what it should: provides easy access to your beverages without having to screw off a lid. My only complaints are that it has leaked a few drops when I tilted my Klean Kanteen to drink out of it. Perhaps the gasket wasn't completely sealed around the threads. It leaked from the base of the lid and I was annoyed, since I was drinking hot tea. That has only happened once though. Also, when I take my first sips after screwing on the lid, the liquid doesn't flow easily. After that, it'll splash into my mouth without warning, which has scalded my tongue. I am now very cautious about using it with hot beverages.

I received a "16oz Insulated" Klean Kanteen Mug with cafe cap and loop cap as a gift. I've used it now for 6 months and this is the BEST CAFE MUG EVER! I enjoy it even more that my "Thermose" brand mug. With the "cafe cap" attached a hot tea will stay hot for up to 8 hours under normal room temperatures and will stay warm after sitting in a below freezing car for 6 hours (in snowy Denver). I'm sure if I used the loop cap, the performance would be even better.

I don't know if the REI website says that the cafe cap isn't leak proof, but it's VERY EXPLICET on the Klean Kanteen website that it is NOT leak proof. If you want a leak proof lid use the loop cap. The cafe cap screws onto the thermal cup snugly and I've never had a problem with it.

The cafe cap is super easy to clean, just pop off the swivel part of the cap and wash (either in dishwasher or by hand).

I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants to keep their drinks HOT for long periods of time.

Although its a good idea... and it seems to be the only alternative to the splashguards that fit the Nalgene bottles... its absolutely not spill proof. I went to a wide mouth klean kanteen because steel bottles are generally higher quality compared to a Nalgene bottle. I loved my Nalgene bottle, but after ALOT of use, and dragging it around EVERYWHERE, a stainless bottle is worth the money, EXCEPT when you can't get a flippin' splashguard for it. I toss my bottle around constantly, and this cap is NOT at all what I wanted it to be. It does a great job of limiting the amount of liquid rushing towards your face, but let the bottle tip more than 45 degrees in any direction and it'll start to spill out, unless the bottle is only half full, then you get a little bit more leeway. Not to mention, if your drink a lot of water and prefer the 40oz bottle, this cap makes the bottle a pain in the butt to carry around. There's no loop to grab a hold of.
