First off, these run small so be sure to order a half or full size up. I normally wear an 8 (in Merrell boots) or 8 1/2 (Garmont, Montrail) but these fit me perfectly in a 9. They have a roomy toe box and a fairly snug heel. I have a somewhat wide fore-foot and average to narrow heel and flat arches, to give you an idea of the fit.

Now to the best stuff -- I love these boots so much I just ordered a second pair to save until the first pair wears out. I've owned at least 15 pairs of hiking boots from at least 10 makers in over 40 years of outdoor trekking and these are up there with the best I've used. They have outstanding ankle support -- I badly sprained an ankle 3 months ago and had not been able to hike more than a mile or so without both the ankle and my arch and instep becoming painful. I put these Malvern boots on right out of the box the day after buying them and hiked 6 miles, up and down hill, on a rocky and unstable trail and my foot and ankle felt good as new. NO break in time is needed for these -- but I have always found that to be true for Hi Tecs (these are my 4th pair of Hi Tec hiking boots.)

Unlike a lot of high-topped boots, these cradle the ankle and the unique tongue design doesn't put pressure on your ankle or instep. The shank and sole make the boots very protective of rough trail conditions and keep your foot stable for confident rock hopping. Really, they are almost magical shoes, at least for me. I credit them with helping me in the final stage of recovering from the sprain and getting back to where I can do an sll day hike without that foot aching.

I can't comment on the waterproofness yet since I have yet to use them in the rain. But I am taking them on vacation in two weeks to the Olympic Peninsula and Vancouver Island so they will no doubt get tested in wet conditions. I'll report on that later.

I really like Hi-Tec boots,This is my 4th pair...I just got them today.I'm heading to Half Dome at the end of this month so I will update with more specifics then.
I wore them for 4 hours at work and I really like the feel and look so far.Nice cushion.They have a very easy glide about them in the way they're cut.I feel slightly propelled when walking. They do seem a bit higher than a Mid though,so I did get a little rubbing going on ,which is to be expected since I've only been wearing below the ankle shoes all year.That being said,I was wanting good ankle support as we will be hiking at night and I know the trail,so I'm happy for the support....
I did order a size up,as another reviewer said they run small.If you can try them on at a different store to get a better idea,that's what I did. Nice and light too,feels very well made,and a good price...more to come...
