Comments about REI Hiker First-Aid Kit - Special Buy:
I really like this first aid kit, more so than the new version due to the layout. Items are placed in easy to find spots, unlike other kits where everything is crammed into a plastic bag and you have to dump it all out to find a band aid. Most items came in small plastic bags to make them water resistant (since the bag itself isn't…con), I took the liberty of making sure all items were in bags. Great kit!! Now for the biggest con...it's incomplete. I went through an exchange only to find out that this kit doesn't include all items listed. It's missing: 3 Sanidex wipes, 1 antibacterial wipe, 1 pill vial, 3 safety pins, pencil and accident report form. My local REI did a great job replacing the items as best they could but I'll have to replace some of them on my own.
All in all this is a great kit and has some room for expansion since not everything is crammed in there.

Very nice fully equipped kit. Has room for additional items. Take out the book and it's even lighter. Slightly bulky but good for multi-day trips. Easy open and easy access to all contents

Comments about REI Hiker First-Aid Kit - Special Buy:
They call it the "Hiker", which is honestly a bit generous. I've never gone out hiking with this thing, and I'm not sure I ever will. It is a bit bulky and heavy, and I really think its a bit overkill for a hike. And to be a bit brutal, I think their whole line of first aid kits are large, heavy, and have a hard time earning a spot in any of my packs whether it be a day hike, overnighter, or proper backpacking.
BUT, this is still such a great first aid kit. It is well organized, well equipped, and is perfect for keeping in the car 24/7. I imagine it would be good for boy & girl scout trips as well or family car camping, where you will have lots of those expected injuries when you combine of children, excitement, and the outdoors.
Furthermore, it will be difficult to get all this gear without spending three times the price. Sure, it doesn't have every size and shaped bandage you could want, but it has everything you'd need. And as the supply gets low, simply restock the bag with your preferred bandages and the like, and then you can pick and choose exactly what you want and don't want.
