Comments about Marmot Super Gravity Jacket - Men's:
I've been looking for a windproof softshell with a little bit of insulation that could double as a light rain jacket (so it needs a hood) for hiking, camping, snowshoeing, cold-weather training and around-town use. A do-it-all jacket that will replace a handful of jackets in my closet. This jacket definitely fits the bill, is priced very well, and looks pretty good.
As far as the jacket itself goes, the material seems very durable and weatherproof. A little stiff almost, but I'm guessing it would get more flexible over time. Nice fleece lining, seems very warm (maybe a touch too warm for high-output aerobic activities). Lots of good techy features (adjustable hood, adjustable cuffs, inner and sleeve pocket) without anything unnecessary. The jacket has a nice appearance and would look okay both on the mountain and around town without looking too outdoorsy. As of this review, REI only sells the monotone black, but I really like the two-tone blue color. One critique of the cut I have is that the arms taper to the cuffs, but that's a personal preference. Definitely appears well-made.
The sizing is a little odd. The fit is the same as the non-hooded Gravity jacket. I'm 5'6", with a muscular build and am usually either a small or a medium depending on the cut (I bought both sizes). For the small size, the length of the torso and sleeves is perfect, but it's definitely tight on the chest, arms, and SUPER tight around the bottom hem. The hem of the jacket lands around the widest part of my hips and it was difficult to get the zipper started. Could maybe get a tee or a thin layer underneath, but definitely not a casual shirt or sweater. Compared to the Marmot ROM or Sharp Point jacket, it seems much tighter.
I tried the medium and it seems huge. The torso and arm length are very long and there is a lot of room in the abdomen. I have to pull the jacket down over my butt otherwise it bunches in the torso and makes me look pregnant (the stiffness of the material contributes to this bunching). It kind of looked like I was wearing a coat that was one size too big. As a point of reference from another vendor, the medium sized jacket is modeled on someone 5'11" 175 lbs. So if you have a broad build in the chest/torso/hips or are proportionally short for your weight, you may not be able to find a size that fits.
Overall, I really like the jacket and am really impressed with what you get for the price. The fit seems odd, but that's highly dependent on body type. If you're looking for a weather-resistant, warm, durable, hooded softshell for a reasonable price, this seems like an ideal choice.
