My second oldest son has recently outgrown his Giro Rascall helmet. I found this helmet for a very attractive price at REI Outlet and thought we'd give it a try thanks to REI's very liberal return policy and great price.

The helmet has exceeded my expectations. It's adjustment system was so easy, my six year old picked it up and was immediately able to adjust himself to be both snug and comfortable on his head. Additionally, the buckle for the helmet is a far superior design. It's more of a ratcheting strap than a buckle. This eliminates the posibility of pinching (if you've ever pinched your kids by accident with the buckle, you know what a struggle it can be to get them to wear a helmet again) and provides another easy adjustment point. As an added bonus, this buckle is easy to operate by kids wearing gloves. You can't ask for any better.

Speaking of adjustment, one of my issues with the Giro helmet was adjustment: it has no adjustment. The fit is provided by a firm elastic strap on the back that goes between the straps. This works well enough for kids that just put their helmets on and only ride their bikes when it's 72 and sunny, but falls far short if you want to use a balaclava, headband, cap or anything else for either warmth or sun protection. My six year old actually prefered to be cold rather than wear his balaclava since it was so uncomfortable with this style of fit adjustment. However, the Uvex's dial fit is both easily adjustable and easy for kids to use. No more problems with the helmet fitting too tightly when using a balaclava or headband!

One more thing that this helmet includes that is not mentioned in the description is a blinky light on the back. It's certainly not as bright as a Superflash, but it'll get a kid noticed at night.
