Comments about Knog Boomer USB Rechargeable Front Bike Light:
I was a little hesitant to purchase the Knog Boomer USB after reading the reviews for the battery powered version, but the USB rechargeable feature was irresistible for the price (especially with the REI member refund). I'm around computers all day and all night so finding a free USB port is never a problem. It was either the Knog Boomer USB or the Flea, but the Knog has a brighter and wider beam so I went for it. It looks like they worked out all the kinks with this version.
I commute to work 8 miles each way on an old Schwinn Traveler. My route takes me down a brick cobbled hill, over a long boardwalk, through a wide paved forested path, and down some country roads. Past reviewers indicated that the Knog Battery Boomer had trouble maintaining its aim, or would switch modes when riding over bumps or shifting gears. Tonight I rode over every manhole cover, every crooked board on the boardwalk, every hellishly dislodged concrete slab on the way home with no problems. I rode down the cobbled hill twice – first fast, then down again slower to get the full cobbled road effect with no problems. The Knog maintained both its beam direction and mode with no problems. I was able to easily readjust the beam's aim mid-ride, and it held its place the entire rest of the ride home.
I was really impressed with the width of the beam when I reached the forested portion of my commute. I had grown accustomed to seeing things in two colors with my old light: bluish-white and dark. My old Cateye always made me feel claustrophobic and more than once I've found myself riding off the trail into the grassy sides because the colors made it difficult to distinguish paved path from forest edge.
The Knog Boomer USB has two yellow centers inside the large bluish white beam which I think increase the contrast, because the trail edges were easy to distinguish. The beam is so wide the bright center portion covered the entire path (~6 feet), and the extra wide periphery lit up the plants on all sides. I felt confident riding with the Knog Boomer lighting the way.
Another complaint I read was that the button was too sensitive or insensitive. When properly fitted into the silicone casing, the button is just the right sensitivity- sensitive enough that it is easy to switch modes while wearing soft gloves (or when your hands are frozen!), and insensitive enough that there is no worry of it sporadically changing modes. The button is sensitive enough that it would probably switch on if tossed in a bag, though.
I've had it for 2 days and ridden about 20 miles with it on so far (16 in twilight conditions, 5 in full dark), and the more I use it the more I enjoy it. It has 4 light patterns: 1) constant on/off flash, 2) short-long 3) long repeating pattern 4) solid on. When charging/plugged into the USB port, it emits a bright red light so I would not recommend charging it in the same room you sleep in. I'm not sure how long it takes to charge, I haven't had it long enough to run it down yet, but I think a while since it was plugged in for 30 minutes this afternoon and remained red. The USB port on the back has a nice hard case that fits seamlessly with the rest of the light.
The only downside seems to be that the silicone is almost too sticky- I bought the white version and keep finding my cat's grey hairs all over it. Also, once it is in the silicone case it takes a little wiggling to dislodge in order to access the charging port.

Comments about Knog Boomer USB Rechargeable Front Bike Light:
This light works great for my slight pre dawn rides. I ride on rail trails and the light is nice to alert walkers and other riders. You can see this from what seems like forever- I have had other riders comment that they could see me coming on a straight away from quite far. The mount is just what I was looking for- simple, easy, without velcro or screws. Easy on and off, with a secure hold. The main light piece takes a bit of finesse to get out of the latex, but once you develop a technique it is no problem. I find it easiest to grip the sides while pushing from the bottom. The random strobe makes a great alert.
I have not used the light for strict night riding, but it is a great light to flick on while taking the car to inside at night, plenty of light to walk in the pitch dark.

Comments about Knog Boomer USB Rechargeable Front Bike Light:
I'm a year round everyday bike commuter in Seattle riding into work in the dark at 5:30am. My biggest problem with bike lights is that they slowly get weaker and I need to remember to replace the batteries. This light solves that problem. When I get to work I pull them off (very easy to remove and put on) and about once a week plug them into my computer to charge. While plugged in the light turns green when it is fully charged. These are great bright lights that enable me to be seen.
