Comments about Kelty Trekker 65 External Frame Pack:
The model I have is not exactly this one, it's the 3900 short back Trekker model for women. However it's the same except different size and boy a much less attractive colour (mine is drab grey and khaki!) I LOVE my Trekker. My partner has the Tioga and he's happy with his too. I have tried so many packs over the years as I have a couple of back problems which are exacerbated by carrying the now-standard internal frame pack which seems to put more strain on your shoulders and lower back. It got to the point where I was looking at carts, as this was going to be the only way I could continue to hike, but that would have severely limited the trails I could use! The Trekker is not a lightweight pack, however for me it so much easier to carry the load than in a lighter less supported model, the load actually feels lighter, strangely! The external frame carries the weight higher up, closer vertically to your centre of gravity, and puts the weight nicely on hips and legs and minimal pressure on my lower back. I have never gotten a sore back from my Trekker. The Trekker has shaped shoulder straps and everything feels very good quality in terms of the harness. It's amazing how much you can fit in there with all those big pockets and its so easy to organize and find your gear. You can hang your bedroll off the bottom, saving space in your pack. For carrying a load on good trails, the Trekker has saved my back and made it possible. The drawbacks are just the usual ones quoted for external frame packs - not good for use in rougher terrain, scrambling etc. You do have to be more careful and get used to having the weight up high and it can bash against overhangs etc if you're not paying attention, but that's just a matter of getting used to it. I love it and I hope Kelty keeps making it for many years to come!! The only thing I'd change and it's a quibble but I'd like the top pockets to be symmetrical. One is a lot bigger than the other it's hard to have balanced weight and being at the top that's significant (think, pendulum!) I'd like them both to be like the one with the mesh sleeve behind, which is convenient for water.
Service and delivery comments:
Ordered from Australia and collected from San Francisco store - great service.

Comments about Kelty Trekker 65 External Frame Pack:
I have used this pack for trips ranging from 2 to 5 days in length, and it worked great every time. I have also lent the pack to a friend who is really short and we were able to size the frame down so it fit her with only minimal effort. All my friends have internal frame packs, but his one allows me to easily strap all sorts of stuff (tent, tent pad, etc) to the outside. It is also surprisingly stable/doesn't move around much during use.

Comments about Kelty Trekker 65 External Frame Pack:
I purchased a Trekker back in the mid 1980's and back then fellow hikers said, "nice pack but overpriced". My reply was that with the suspension adjustments, it fit perfect and it's hard to put a price on comfort. Today's hikers I meet comment more on the antique look of the pack and have no idea how much cooler a quality external pack is than the internal frame they are sporting.
If you're wondering why I waited 30 years to write about this beloved piece of equipment it's because recently one of the brass grommets on the shoulder strap was tearing free. Being a person who always looks to "repair before replacing" I called Kelty toll free line, hoping I might be able to purchase new pads that could be adapted to my old was immediately connected to a customer service rep who helped me out. Within 10 days I had the replacement straps and they fit perfectly!
Besides the comfort of this pack, the features I like the most are the easy to access large top-loading compartment, the 6 zippered pockets and the separate sleeping bag section. It easily holds 30+ pounds of gear & food, enough for quite a few days on the trail. The zippers have never snagged, the seam are all still connected.
Buy this now and in 30 years you will be writing a review to the testament of this great American product and company.
Thanks also to REI for continuing to carry this pack.

Comments about Kelty Trekker 65 External Frame Pack:
I didn't rate all of the features yet as I haven't used this on the trail. Looks like a good design for a small person. The previous review described it keeping the weight off of your shoulders and good distribution for your back, which is just what I need, and it looks like it will work. The one caution is that the "hydration sleeve" is not actually a hydration sleeve. It's horizontal, so unless you buy a horizontal pouch (camelbak supposedly makes one) it won't work well. That was disappointing as it was one of the reasons I wanted a new pack. Other than that it has a lot of adjustability, and although an external frame is heavier it seems to distribute the load better. Where I've had other packs jab my back or keep my head from coming completely up, this seems to be a smart design. I'll update after I actually use it!
