I did not pick these boots out for myself. And honestly, I probably never would have. BUT. I am so glad that I was given these Montaras! I wear a 6.5 in regular shoes, 7 in hiking boots. When I first put them on, they seemed a touch snug. However, they formed to my foot almost immediately. I carried a heavy pack with these through Big Bend for four days- over rocky trails, loose dirt trails, up and down the Chisos- and not one blister. My feet didn't even get tired! They were just that comfortable. ALSO I didn't even use my camp shoes, nor did I care that much about getting out of the boots. I loved them and I loved how comfortable they were. They kept me from rolling my ankle on a couple of occasions, and were grippy enough for me to climb around on some big boulders. I can't wait for my next backpacking trip just so I can wear my Montaras around some more!

I was so excited when I saw these boots but couldn't find too many reviews. These are apparently only sold online at REI, so I couldn't size them in the store. I am a casual shoe size 7 but generally go up 1/2 size or more for running and hiking shoes. So I bought the 7.5 thinking that it would be great for longer hikes when your feet swell. However, walking around in the house, my heels seemed to lift a little too much. Not wanting mean blisters, I decided to order the size 7 to compare. Got the 7's but knew right away that my toes would be rubbing the sides in no time and would be the cause of tears on a down-slope. After about 30 minutes walking around with the 7.5's tightly laced in my wool hiking socks, my feet felt molded into them. Sent the 7's back. When in doubt, go up a size. And wear them for at least 30 minutes in the socks you plan to hike in before you make a decision about size. I'll be breaking them in on a 5 hour hike this weekend and I know I made the right decision. These are seriously sexy in the world of hiking boots. Love them!

I have been a fan of Ahnu for 2 years now. My latest purchase was the Montara Boot. I hiked all over San Juan Island, and The Cascades and it was like these shoes just molded to my feet! Lightweight and waterproof, this boot will take you anywhere you need to go. I wouldn't trek glacial peaks with these boots, however they are great on rough terrain. No slipping either. In fact, these shoes actually GRIP onto wet surfaces. These boots are nothing short of amazing.

Just got back from my first trip using these boots and they worked great. Wore them around the house a bit first, but there was no real break-in time required. I ended up ankle deep in a creek while pumping water and my socks stayed nice and dry. I actually got a little water over the top, but they were laced tightly so no water in the actual boot. The traction on them could be a little better or I wouldn't of tested the water resistance. My feet still sweat a bit in them. They have good lateral support for my ankles and the heel area is soft and flexible. No blisters on my first wear! The purple color is a bit different, but it really is a pretty color. They price is great too. These are better boots than some of the expensive North Face.

I am not a hiker by nature or experience. I bought these boots in the hope that they would work for a trip to Peru and the Amazon.
It took no time at all to break them in. They were extremely comfortable, light and waterproof.
They did a good job both in the very hot Amazon rainforest and just as good in the high Andes.
I will treasure these for a long time.

I liked the weight and feel of these boots and that they were waterproof, and was okay in two weekend trips (mostly flat) but once I was on a weeklong backpacking trip in the mountains, I had horrible heel blisters on both feet (they are still healing 10 days after returning), blisters between my big and second toes on both feet, and blisters on both of my little toes. I've not had any blisters with my previous two pairs of boots. Also, more importantly, something about the ankle support was not great for me and I pulled something in my inner ankle as well. I would return them to the manufacturer for being very dissatisfied if their return policy allowed such.

I absolutely love these shoes! They are comfortable, require no break in time, and the color is beautiful. I am just severely disappointed in their quality. I do a fair amount of hiking off trail in my job: 8+ hour days during the summer. After two months or so these shoes were already falling apart and now after 5 months I need to get a new pair. I do plan on getting the same pair again thanks to the fantastic return policy.
These shoes work fairly well for my narrow heals and wider toe box, but are still a bit wide in the heals for me. I also added my own insoles since the ones they came with were quite inadequate for my high arches.

I bought these boots based upon the amazing reviews. At least one reviewer said they would be good for backpacking, so although I didn't expect them to actually BE for backpacking, I had the impression they would be pretty sturdy. I have worn them several times on varying types of terrain for no less than 6 miles. I feel these boots are glorified sneakers, with very flexible soles. The outer shell, a purple faux suede material, is very pretty, until you hike in the mud like I did in the White Mountains of NH and now there is no getting them clean. (I got some great photos of my not yet muddy boots alongside lupine of the same color, though.) There was no break in to speak of. The sizing is quite roomy, so keep this in mind for sizing. My backpacking boots are Vasque Breeze size 10M, and I bought these in a 10 also. These feel MUCH roomier. One other thing- the lacing goes thru these little metal D rings. On one of my boots, one ring doesn't lay flat so it kind of pokes into my foot a bit. So all in all, these do not seem like a true hiking boot to me...unless you just do shorter, easier hikes. I wish I hadn't muddied them up so much, because now they don't look quite so pretty for wearing off the mountain!

I bought these boots based on the 5 star reviews. I gracefully slid my feet into them and it was as if they were made for me. Hardly any break in needed. I wore them around town running errands for a couple of days. They performed exceptionally well as far as warmth, comfort, grip and support when I hiked the Big Sur area this past week with my family. My feet stayed dry, warm and supported. An added bonus is that they make my feet look smaller than there real size 10. I love that in a shoe. Super comfy, lightweight and durable. Planning to purchase a pair for my teenage daughter soon.
