    Comments about Timbuk2 Bullitt Pannier:

Bag accomplishes dual purpose of pannier and messenger bag.

Pros: Definitely waterproof as main flap covers side areas well and bag lining is waterproof material.

Hooks are long and stay put on back rack.

Plenty of room to carry papers, gear, food, etc.

Shoulder strap and handle provide good options for carrying when not on the bike.

Cons: No pockets on outside of bag and divider inside and pockets under flap could be bigger.

Velcro fastening system for hooks impractical, unnecessary.

Hooks mounted halfway up the bag rather than at the top so pannier sits high on bike rack--see photos on product page.

    Comments about Timbuk2 Bullitt Pannier:

Overall this is a great bag, but as you can see in the name, it should also be a great pannier, which it is not. The bag is well constructed, and for the most part deals with the punishment that my active lifestyle deals out. The one problem I have with it, though, is that when mounting it on the rear rack of my bike, it is very precarious to try to get it to mount just right so that it stays put and doesn't interfere with the rear spokes. I think this is a two part problem: no bottom clip like you see on most panniers, and more importantly not a rigid enough backing for the dimensions of the bag. When there is much of anything inside the bag, the backing flexes enough that the rear corner protrudes into the path of the spokes. I could possibly solve that problem by moving the bag forward, but then I would hit the front of the bag with my foot while pedaling. At this time I would not recommend this product, but I have a call in to Timbuk2 to see if they can help to resolve the issue.

    Handles Commuting With Ease

      Comments about Timbuk2 Bullitt Pannier:

This bag has been a long time coming for those of us who commute regularly. This bag is both a true pannier and a true messenger bag with a good capacity and waterproof lining. Timbuk2 cleverly solved two problems faced by commuters with this bag: sweaty backs and panniers that are unwieldy to transport off the bike.

As a pannier, this bag is stable and stays put on your rack while riding. As a messenger bag, the nice wide shoulder strap makes carrying the bag off the bike as easy as any other backpack or messenger bag I have owned. I added one of Timbuk2's strap pads for about $10 for some added comfort for off-the-bike use.

At first, I was skeptical of the capacity of the bag from the online pictures and descriptions, but it will handle a lot of your stuff with ease. I can fit 2-3 large textbooks, my netbook, lunch, and a jacket in the bag with no problem.

Overall, highly functional and well worth the money!

        Comments about Timbuk2 Bullitt Pannier:

I got a rack set-up this summer in preparation for starting grad school in the fall. Currently I commute to work w/this bag on my rack (6 mi roundtrip); I plan to commute to school in the fall (8 mi roundtrip).

So far, I LOVE this bag. It is totally functional and comfortable as a messenger bag, while also providing the convenience of riding with a pannier. I MUCH prefer this setup to riding w/a backpack (sweaty back = ick!).

Here's the ultimate test: I just rode home in a severe thunderstorm. Parts of the road were flooded so that I was riding ankle-deep in water. When I got home, there was a tiny amount of water in the very bottom of the bag; no clothes/phones/ipods were damaged during the trip.

I, like others, was skeptical about the mounting setup on this bag. However, for semi-serious city riding, the hooks on this bag are totally sufficient and secure.

I am extremely glad I opted for this more affordable pannier, as opposed to some of the larger, more serious pannier/messenger bags that are out there.

Really, I can't stress it enough. It's a great bag.

        Comments about Timbuk2 Bullitt Pannier:

I have been using this bag for about 4 months. I don't go cycling without it. If you are someone that either 1)commutes to work or 2)likes to make the occasional jaunt through the city or the country, then this bag is for you. I have been making weekend cycle trips (not over night) with this bag in France and it is perfect because you can stop in the small towns and comfortably carry it with you, fill it with wine, charcuterie, cheese, bread, a camera, a picnic blanket and you've got one great day ahead of you. I even have put small ice packs in it to keep things cool. The waterproof interior makes for easy cleaning and there are plenty of smaller pockets on the front to organize keys, passport, etc.

I too think the strap could be a little more comfortable. I too was concerned about the efficacy of the mounting hooks at first, but I've run over plenty of pot-holes and traveled on dirty rocky roads and I haven't had a problem at all. I would recommend that once the bag is mounted to use the velcro straps to help secure the bag to the rack. I have a Jamis Aurora 2010 size 50 and a Topeak Explorer rack, and my feet have heals have never hit the bag, but of course that has everything to do with geometry.

        Comments about Timbuk2 Bullitt Pannier:

First, I have owned a Bullitt since it first hit the isle at my local REI and have been very pleased, so pleased that I went in to to buy another one for a matched set. My local REI had the same sell price on the Bullitt as is currently online, but they were completely out of Bullitts and not showing anymore coming in.

I then went online to Timbuk2 and noticed they were no longer showing the Bullitt on their website. I called to ask why and that's when I got the official word that Timbuk2 is no longer making this model. I was surprised because I always loved my Bullitt and it is still a relatively new product, but Timbuk2 is opting for the new Tandem and Shift model instead.

Sooo, get it while you can, I sure am! And for the record: the bag is excellent. I commute every day about 25 miles and this bag is a winner. Yes, it does sit a little high and thank goodness it does because I'm 6'4, wear size 13, and put longer 185 crank arms on my bike - and this bag has NO HEAL STRIKE! Perfect.

This bag is very professional looking and I like that for commuting to work. The inner sleeve holds my laptop or clipboard beautifully. The bag is very secure with its excellent design of extended/deeper hooks. I also love how it holds its shape. So many panniers lose their shape when empty or half full but not this one.

I really like using this bag for grocery shopping too. I've had Wald folding baskets on a specific grocery getter bike, but they are permanently mounted, heavy, and that's not the look or bike I want to ride. The Bullitt gets the job done with good capacity and the large flap keeps items secure, more so than an open bag in a basket.

Get it why while you still can at a great price here online.

        Comments about Timbuk2 Bullitt Pannier:

As mentioned by another reviewer, the bag does not completely resist water. I road 13 miles today after (not during) a rain storm. Just from road spray, the inside (bottom) of the bag was pretty wet (with a few ounces of water). The top was closed tightly, so the water mostly soaked through the stitching from below. Though I can't be 100% sure. Fortunately my laptop was in a separate case.

This bag feels heavy, but well built (apart from the leakiness). The extra weight can be nice; at least on weekend rides the bike feels 30 lbs lighter
        without it :-)

An additional bungee is crucial to keep the bag on your bike. Large road bumps (train tracks) at modest speeds (20 mph) will jar the bag off. Bungees are cheap and don't impact the bags usefulness.

The fact that the bag sits up higher than other bags has not been an issue. I worried about that before making the purchase, but it is not a problem at all.

The included strap is uncomfortable and the bag so box-shaped that I seriously doubt you will actually want to carry this as a shoulder bag for more than a few 100 feet. Plus the bag is too heavy, even with a modest load, to be comfortable.

In summary, the bag is just average. I've had the bag for 5 months and I plan to keep it. But will be on the look out for something better.

        Comments about Timbuk2 Bullitt Pannier:

The black bag has a cheap and small backer board that flexes and bends when attached to the bike. Can't handle the weight of a change of clothes and pair shoes! No bottom attachment so it bounces up and down. I had the brown/orange one that was better constructed, but could use a bottom bungie.

Returning it to the store immediately.

          Comments about Timbuk2 Bullitt Pannier:

This is an update to my previous review. After a couple months of use, I cannot recommend that anyone purchase this item. I contacted Timbuk2 directly about the issue of using this as a pannier, and they said they would get back to me, but never did. Now I am having issues with the shoulder strap popping out of its clip. Timbuk2 seems to have a reputation for building quality products, but I can't say that I have experienced that with this product.
