Comments about Arc'Teryx Altra 65 Pack:
FYI - This review replaces my review of the Altra 75, which I downgraded size-wise for this one. Realized still was packing too large and needed the right size pack.
Well, I think I finally found it after packing around Montana for over week. Had it set to go for 3 day packs and in/out 2 days too. The pack was great. Expanded well to comfortably fit me with 40-45 pounds of gear and cinch down well to haul only 30-35 as trip wore on.
The main draw to this pack was its zipper access, etc. And it has me raving more and more after extensive use. It is unreal the access from top loading to zipping from all angles as if it were a suitcase. I cannot say enough about how awesome this access is.
I loved the outer large pocket running down the spine. Was perfect for stuffing warm layers/rain gear on the go and grabbing on the go as needed.
The top loader pouch has ample room and space. 1 good size pocket, one really large one that fills out well and a third undercarriage one perfect for stashing things like a map, passport, or wallet or other items you need little space or limited access for while on the trail.
The stretch pockets on either side by the waist were great for stashing my water bottels and water pump. Easy access all the time.
I don't quite understand the waist belt complaints. at times it moved on me, but all in all it was so incredibly comfortable and I never relaly made a single adjustment to the pack after the first use. I lvoe the thick, stable loading way the waist belt and shoulder straps work together. I tried on lots of other packs before the Arc Teryx and their thin belts really were a deterrent. This thick one simply was everything I wanted.
The water bladder is weird given the side access. I wish it were central, behind the pack somehow. But I can live with it where it is. What the real drawback is is not hte location, but rather the limited bladder brand options that can fit in the space and be used. I have to brands of bladder bags and unfortunately, only one (my less preferred), works in the space.
The other real thing I hated was the cinch ring on the hsoulder strap for my bladder bag tube kept coming off the shoulder strap during my travels. Often occurred when dropping hte bag for a little while, sometjign got snagged. It was a real easy fix, but definitely a bit annoying. I simply wish the clips/cinch for a bladder bag tube stayed on and worked better.
The top pouches are great for storing many items. the only downside is cannnot take it off to throw on w/ waist belt for small little walks, etc. It remains my biggest complaint about the pack. I miss that feature with prior packs I have used. Also, if you don't fill out the bag a lot, but did fill out the top pouch, it can sorta drag down on the bag and feel heavy and a tad unstable. Still, this likely only occurs if you just arent distributing weight optimally or really carrying a lighter load, but maybe one heavy item like a camera or something up top. So not likely too often is this a problem. Regardless of this I will manage w/ everything else I love about the pack.
I originally thought (as i said about the Altra 75) the lack of cinch straps, etc was a problem. But I have come to feel the opposite . There are just enough to make this pack work. Anymore and you should be hauling a bigger bag. I could easily strap my mat on the bottom of the pack outside, throw on my sandals on the side straps, and still have room elsewhere if needed to strap something on to the outside.
Overall, I simply love this pack. It looks great, is sleek, cinches down well if you are hauling only a little bit of gear, and is just incredibly comfortable. It adjusts well, moves well w/ your body, feels right, and is fun to use while providing amazing access to your gear at all times. I am a total advocate for the Altra. This is simply a GREAT pack for an overnight to even a week or so if you pack well. I cannot understand any naysayers. If you need a pack, do not stop, run and check this one out.

Comments about Arc'Teryx Altra 65 Pack:
I used this pack for an 11-day Philmont trek. Carried 45-50#. At 35# you almost forget the pack is on your back. With 50#, you feel it, but it is still very comfortable, and the weight naturally falls to you hips. Definitely the most comfortable pack I have ever worn. I also like the zipper access that makes the pack open like a duffle bag. Makes it very easy to unpack when setting up camp.
Make sure that you get measured before you buy a pack. I am 6'2 and so I bought the large pack. it was very uncomfortable with 35#, and I went back to REI and the rep told me that I needed the regular. Sure enough, once I got the new pack, and adjusted it, it was perfect.

Comments about Arc'Teryx Altra 65 Pack:
This is such a good pack! It's a HUGE 65 liter pack! It opens up like a suit case so you can have access to every part of you pack. I switched from the Gergory baltoro 65 to this pack, and that's some big shoes to fill! The pivot hip belt is the high light of this pack. The hip belt was squeaking, so I contacted Arc'Teryx and they sent me some special grease and that totally took care of the problem. The only down fall I have found about this pack is the hydration pack on the side. But I just put my hydration bladder in the lid of the pack and it worked just fine. That's the only reason I didn't give it a 5 star ratting.

Comments about Arc'Teryx Altra 65 Pack:
I am not backpacking light freak who sleeps without a pad or under a minimalist tarp. However, as I've gotten older, I've realized that less weight makes for a more enjoyable backpacking trip. This pack dropped 3.5 lbs. off my previous pack. And it's just as comfortable. By limiting my gear to 65 liters with this pack, I eliminated everything that's not important.
With the Altra pack, I have plenty of room for what matters. And the suitcase zipper makes it easy to access. It is an incredibly comfortable pack. I love the big, fat waistband and suspension system. I have carried 40-45 lbs. very comfortably for a week in the Altra 65.
