Comments about Light & Motion Stella 150N LED Bike Light:

I work in the LED lighting industry and have an engineering background, so I was very careful in reviewing all of the LED bicycle light systems out there before I made this kind of investment ("significant", to say the least!).

After visiting several manufacturer's websites, Light&Motion impressed me the most. High-power LEDs generate a significant amount of heat, and if the system is not designed to properly dissipate that heat, the LED's lifetime will suffer greatly. The L&M engineers clearly accounted for this, as the Stellas all feature fairly large finned heatsinks that are open to the air. And it works - even after running the light for 1 hour at full power, the light only feels mildly warm to the touch. Looking at the other products out there, I'm not so confident that the designers took this into account.

The other aspects of the Stella also appear to be well thought-out - I love the rubber strap mounting system that accommodates any size handlebar. A helmet mount is also included, which in my opinion is much more valuable than the handlebar mount (I use the light primarily for commuting). With the helmet mount, you have 100% control over where the light falls, so you can see turns coming up well before you make them, instead of 0.5 seconds before with a handlebar mount. You can also point the light directly at cars that don't seem to be paying attention (they usually do pay attention then :) The separate light source and battery mean that you can balance the weight on your head so you don't constantly feel like there is a weight pulling your head to one side (some of the other products feel like that).

As far as light output goes, I originally got the Stella 120, but found that 120 lumens wasn't quite enough for me - I had to really focus to see the potholes and just felt overall like I could use more light. I stepped up to the 150 and saw a significant difference - there is definitely enough light here to see the road at several car lengths ahead of you, but still not so much light that your eyes need to adjust when looking at a darker spot.

If I had to complain about something, it would be with the battery: for this price, you might expect a Li-ion battery instead of the NiMH that comes with the 150. There's no smart charger, just an "overnight" charger with no cutoff, so you have to be vigilant with your charging routine. Also, if you're looking for super-long run times, you may be disappointed that the 150 only lasts a bit over 2 hours on full power. These things don't bother me too much, because the 2+ hours is more than enough for my 30-minute commute and I don't have a problem with overnight charging.

Overall, if you have the means to make this investment, I would highly recommend it based on my experience so far.
